Today Preston and I went to 19 banks...

....and bought 2 rolls of pennies at each bank for a total of 38 rolls of coin. Some of the tellers were extra nice and went out of their way to look for the Presidential dollars. One bank had a $2 bill that we bought. Another bank had an Ike dollar (although it's a little spotty) but we bought that, too. We got home and ripped the rolls open and found 12 wheat pennies and just as many Canadian cents. Nothing else too special...a shiny 2012 here and there, plenty of copper pennies we put aside. I need to research the 1970 small date and large date better. Overall, we have a LOT of pennies to DUMP lol

Sounds like you're on your way to a decent collection. What year / mintmark is the Ike?

Thanks :) To me it's kinda like playing the lotto, but throwing the bad numbers back for a refund lol

    He says it is a 1972 D :)

Ike dollars are an interesting set to start out with. They are big like silver dollars yet affordable, there are enough varieties available that it is good practice in learning how to spot traits of a coin without becoming overwhelmed, and they are "rare" enough that part of the fun is finding banks that have them.

The 1972 D has a single variety: besides the "regular" Ike there is a "peg leg" Ike. The ped leg refers to the "r" of "liberty" on the front. Regular strikes will have serifs on the "r." The peg leg will NOT have a serif on the straight, back part of the r. (A serif is the little "feet" some fonts have... this font is "sans serif," because it doesn't have serifs).

Thank you for that information! I never knew there were that many varieties! I will have Preston do a little more research on it.

Did you ask for any 50 cent peices? I've heard of people finding Silver coins in the loose change that tellers have around.

1965-1969 .50 cent kennedy peices are 40% silver, and anything pre-65 is 90% silver. The 40ers are worth at least $4-5 and the 90%ers are more like $10-12. Very nice finds if you can get them for face value, probably easier said then done though......

We did ask at the majority of them. Most tellers were kind enough to go through what they had since it wasn't a busy day for banking. We also asked for the presidential dollars which most places let us look at before purchasing. Our local bank had 3 one day but they were all clad. He was still pretty happy about them anyway.
