I may be wrong but unless its graded PF67 or higher its not really worth much over $1.00 and even if graded its still not worth anything over $5.

I myself have about a dozen half dollars that are not really worth anything but for some reason they just have that look where I cant get rid of them, they just look better than all the rest. You probably know what I am talking about?

Well I just started doing this. I have kept a bunch that aren't really worth anything but I like lol. I gotta get a better camera my 3GS doesn't do these coins justice. I am finding this site very helpful though! Definitely will help when I get more boxes to sort through next week!

Are you new to coins? The reason I ask is do you know why this coin is so shiny? This coin is what is called a proof, they are designed to be very shinny and are intended for collectors. If you are unfamiliar with this...I or many other members here would be happy to explain to you how they are produced or anything about them. They are quite different from regular circulation strikes.

Yes I am new... Sorry just learning everything. I do get its a proof. Just figured that out after doing more research. Still not sure what it's worth. I'm guessing it would depend on the grade right? I havent figured out the grading part yet or how they determine that. Sorry if my post seems dumb. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it. This site has been very helpful. Matter of fact I ordered me some coins from the mint so I can see the differences of the types of coins. I found this and 20 half dollars betweene 64-68 in 4 rolls of coins now I'm addicted to looking for them... Any help is appreciated. Thanks for your reply.:)

As a rule, proof coins that are found in circulation are considered to be "impaired proofs" which would devalue them considerably below the normal price guides. Yours looks to be in fairly good shape despite the darkness of the fields in your photo. I've found numerous clad proofs, like yours, when I used to search rolls.

Modern impaired proofs might theoretically be worth over face, but in practice, there aren't any buyers for over face. This is because un-impaired, normal proofs are so readily available for cheap, there's no reason for somebody to go purchase an impaired proof. There are a couple exceptions, I suppose, but for the most part, this holds true.
That being said, I still hold on to all the impaired proofs I find roll searching. I find them interesting.

I do too! Who knows! Maybe one day someone will decide to start a registry set of impaired proofs and will want them.

If it wasn't impaired from being in circulation, it could go from $5-$8.50 depending on cameo or deep cameo of the strike. Because the OP's half is impaired, it's value is between $2-$3, to the right person.

did they make silver proof halfs? if so could be worth silver value...being new as well, im not familiar with what proof coins were made with silver vs. clad

Yes they did (and still do), but that one is not silver.

While we are on this, can someone please tell me how to recognize silver clad? Or nickel clad? I don't get how to tell the difference... Also are all proofs marked with an S?

if you look at a silver coin edge it will be all silver with no copper band. And im not 100% but I think s is only proof after certain years.

you could also do a drop test. Silver makes a different sound

Instead of a drop test with a proof, I would recommend the tissue test. This way, you can tell if it's silver or not, without damaging the coin. The tissue test involves putting a piece of kleenex over the coin, and seeing the color that shows through. If it's white, it's silver!

A buck three eighty give or take wouldn't be unreasonable.
