I did some research today on the difference between High Relief and low relief, it is my understanding that the high relief coin had a more raised detail.. I also gathered that it is believed that ALL high relief coins were destroyed. Is this correct?
Here is an archive post on it , there are several others if you use the search box in the blue menu bar at the top. http://www.cointalk.com/t103452/ Green posted 3 times in it , so it must be good welcome to the forum! Jim
i would have to get out my references, but as I remember the original 1921 peace coronet had 9 short spikes, Morgan added 2 in 1922 for the high relief ( Type of '21) BREEN, and then one more was added to make 12 short spikes for the regular 1922 issues ( low relief). But also some have claimed there are "medium relief" 1922 dollars ( coin world article a few years back). I think I referenced it inthe thread I gave above. From your photo , it looks like the regular low relief strike. Jim
Proofs yes, as for business strikes, only 1 has ever been found. But there were over 35,000 high relief business strikes minted. They were supposed to have all been melted. http://www.pcgs.com/books/silver-dollars/Chapter18Listings-006.aspx
Isn't it amazing how after a year or 2 , you forget you ever posted in a thread ( except for the green arrow of course )
