The deeper meaning of coin collecting

    I couldn't possibly disagree more.

    To start, it's not deeply meaningful. Coin collecting is a hobby. A past time. A distraction from the pressures of life. It is at times a pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment, but more often it is a greed driven pursuit that can bring out the very worst in some people.

    I don't know that the character traits developed by cherry-picking, coin doctoring and auction sniping are such that we as a society are served by cultivating them.

    World peace??? Through coin collecting? Have you ever seen the PCGS forum???

    Ahhhh - cynics of the world unite ! Could have written that myself Mike :D

    Seriously though, there is little in this world that you could not say the same things about. So little that I cannot think of a single one. Be that as it may, there is also much good that comes from coin collecting. Example, I consider you my friend. Would that have ever happened had it not been for coin collecting ? You and I go back further than Coin Talk, but it was still coin collecting that introduced us. And who can ever say that friendship is not a good thing ? You want to promote world peace, bring out the best in people - friendship will do it ;)

    And that's kind of the point of Ruben's original post. I would probably have worded his comments differently, for yes, coin collecting can bring out much bad in people at times. But that in no way means that there is no good that comes from it as well.

    I cannot tell you how many friendships I have developed over the course of my life as a direct result of coin collecting. I cannot tell you how many people I have helped over the years. I cannot tell you how many gifts I have given, and received, for no other reason than because I liked, cared for, or even loved the person. And all as a direct result of coin collecting.

    In short, I cannot even begin to tell you how much good that coin collecting has brought in me ! Me ! The guy who his own family considers to be an "old grouch", most of the time anyway ;)

    And if coin collecting can do that for me, just imagine how much good it has done for countless others !

    Coin collecting has help me keep my sanity intact. Haven't thought of "going postal" for a couple of years now.:) That is a good thing for future generations.

    Now ya see ? A perfect example of reactions from those who don't really know me - much like my family's. But that is because my family doesn't really know me either, although that is changing somewhat since for the first time since age 18 I now live in close proximity to them. So after my entire life, they are finally getting to know me.

    Truth be known, I'm a sweatheart ! One of the kindest, sweetest, gentlest, most generous people you would ever meet. But at the same time, when called for, I am the - blankety blank blank - in the valley ;)

    I hope you're kidding. It's a bad 1970s play on Psalm 23 from the Christian Bible.

    Personally, Doug is an old softy. He just tries really hard to hide it sometimes. If you listen to him over long periods of time, you can tell how much he cares about people.

    I knew before his post that we considered each other good friends. It was nice of him to tell the world. It made my whole day.

    I used to like his novels until Sum of All Fears.
    It had about 25 charactors by the time I got to page 100.
    I gave it to the library. I thought I had just quit a
    second job when I got rid of that book.
