I was having a cow about which album to use for my now complete Kennedy set. If I used 8166, then all of the 90s-2011 silver proofs, and my 1964, 1971 and 1976 high end ones would have to be cracked out. I don't want to do that, as some of them are 70s and valuable. The ones that aren't 70s are Dcam 69s and once again, kind of high end for the album. So, my compromise was to go with 7166, and add two extra pages for the proofs I have that are raw. That way, my nice slabbers stay slabbed, and I can still have a high end Gem MS/PR set, and not have to break plastic I really don't wish to crack out. Any one else with this dilemma? Same series, or different one?
I had this same type of problem many years ago trying to find the right Dansco for different sets. I used extra pages with some and found the right one for others. They looked really cool for a few years. Today, most of the proofs are garbage. If you want your proofs to gain ugly spots and toning, put them in an album. Red copper or any type of proofs do not belong in albums. Don't believe me, ask others that have stored them long term in albums.
I have had good luck finding broken out proofs at local coin stores as hole fillers, this keeps MY proof sets intact and keeps my books filled.
I now have all the proofs--just want to keep the really good ones in slabs and the clad ordinary date proofs in the album. I may get some extra lower grade proofs for the album, as the overall level of coins will be about MS 65 or so for the mint state coins. + or - one grade.
If I have a set with some coins slabbed and others not, I'm satisfied with my album having empty spaces. If I'm showing coins to non-collectors then all they are interested is the coin design, not the date or mintmark. If I'm showing coins to collectors then I can also dig out the slabs; they'll understand.
Here is something that I did...it costs a little extra, but it allows for custom sets and still use a Dansco. You can buy blank Dansco pages fairly cheaply. If you're worried about having "holes" in your album, then remove the stock pages and replace them with blank pages that you can label yourself. That way, you can include any variety or leave out any silver proof you want without leaving holes.
That is exactly what I did, Camaro. I got the 7166 album for all the regular Issues, and ordered two extra pages--I will put the non-slabbed proofs in date order, after the regular strikes.
