Hey guys! So I think I really found something here! Backround Story: So I was going to the beach with my friends and when I went to buy train tickets, the machine gave me back my change in dollar coins. I got about 11 back and I lined then all up with the rims and did a quick scan and I noticed one was smooth! I thought I got a G.W. and was stoked but when I saw James Buchanan I was baffled. I did a little research and found there is one that is known so far (http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=13781). So I have some pictures and tell me wht you think. I looked around the entire edge with a illuminated 45x-25mm loupe and saw nothing and compared it to a normal james buchanan and saw no size difference waht so ever (Incase of a possible shave job). **The Obverse is James Buchanan but the photo was to large**

Nice find! That article is from 2010 and states that only one example was known at that time but there have been a few more found since then. The real question is how much market is there for missing edge dollars? If you can find someone who is trying to collect a plain edge of each president you could possibly get a good price. But if the market is just error collectors that simply want an example of a plain edge dollar then any president will do and there is no reason to pay a high premium for a president where only a few are known when a plain edge Washington will do. That tends to hold down the prices on the non-Washington coins.
That is not a shave job. There could be quite a large premium for a coin with such a small population. What kind of condition is the coin in? Anything but MS would would be very bad for the value.
The coin is MS for sure, but I would say a solid MS62 due to some contact marks. Thanks for all the help guys!
