Here is a quick question for those knowledgeable in greek coins. This is the only greek coin in my collection, purchased over 30 years ago. I have a note saying it is an Alexander Drachme, minted at Rhodos. Is this correct? I reviewed ACsearch but was not able to find one with a similar mint mark (which I suppose is the symbol under Zeus' chair) Thanks for any help and regards, Eduard
Rhodes did use PO under the chair but the only one I have seen was a tetradrachm and also had a rose in the left field. To ID this you need a copy of Price's book which is not something I ever bought. Just from the style, I'd guess the coin is later (maybe 2nd century???). I see no reason that it is not from Rhodes.
Thank you very much, Doug. I think that was also what I found in ACsearch - that the PO symbol was only present on tetradrachma, but apparently not on the drachma. I'll need to do some more research on this. Thank you again. Eduard
