Reject Tube & Coinstar Finds

I know alot of you find silver in the reject tube while cashing in your dumps, so here's a little thread for those types of finds. I think Ace and Inq are the kings at finding silver while dumping, eatheir at face or for free. Can't beat finding silver when cashing in!

So I went to a bank this weekend to dump $500 in halves and not been there for a couple months. Things were going well but the machine needed to be opened to clean the sensor. While the teller was in there she pulled out a bunch of stuff from the reject tube and handed it to me. She said I'll take back whatever you don't want and get rid of it for you. I'm searching through maybe 15 pieces and I see a 1954 Washington Quarter! Sweet find and I got it for free. While she was taking care of the machine another guy came in with some change from his car, maybe $50 or so, and I told him to go in front of me because I still had a little to cash in. He cashed in and was on his way and I continued. When I was complete she reached down into the reject tube again and pulls out a couple dimes and a pendant. She hands them over to me and there was a silver Roosie, a clad, and the pendant was silver, weighs about the same as a dime!

$0.35 in 90% silver for free and a 2.5 gram silver St. Jude pendant...Nice score and I left with my cash and a smile on my face.

I'm a little confused about this "reject tube" thing. The machine I used gave me back what it rejected.

 

I went to a coin counter where the tube wasn't vertical enough or something because change was backed up in it. Apparently, they never checked it. I reached up as far as I could and pulled out a fist full of change include a merc, a roosie, and a silver quarter. I really need to go back to that bank but it's not one of my normal dump spots.

 

Kind of like what VA said, but in my case the bags that collect/hold the coins sometimes block the tube from depositing the coins into the slot where your able to retreive them without opening the machine. Then once one or two coins gets stuck in there the rest that are rejected just build up behind. It could have something to do with the angle of the tube not being steep enough, whatever it is I'm thankful I was able to be on the receiving end of this score. This could be the first machine I have come across that rejects silver coins as I have taken lots of rejected coins from other machines tubes and not one of them was silver.

At TD, if they use the tall bags on the machine, it can easily block the reject slot... well, the reject slot was blocked for a while weekend once... they blocked it when I first cashed in on a Friday, then when I came back to dump again on a tuesday, discovered the blockage. All the change came to me... $70 worth.

 

I'm going to have to ask about this next time I go into my local bank! I never even thought about it!

 

Coinstar machines suck now for finding rejects or pocket change. I used to find lots of coins that were left behind in the reject slots. I've found wheats, silver dimes including a Winged Liberty Dime, lots of pocket change on some visits, etc. Now I hardly ever find anything no matter what location I go to that has a Coinstar. Maybe I'll find 1 penny in the reject slot and that's all. Now I tend to find foreign coins that were picked up from the reject slot and left on the counter of the Coinstar machines. Nobody seems to leave their coins in the reject slot anymore. I suspect Coinstar machines now have an explicit message that comes up telling you to check the reject slot but I am not sure of this but the possibility remains highly probable.

 

If you added a few canadians to a handful of coins and they don't come back, would that be a sign the tube is blocked?

 

the coin counters at TD seem to have no problem taking canadians, I'd use some random arcade tokens if you have them lying around

They also have a magnet under the top metal part that will grab the pure nickel canadian stuff, which most of the tellers at the banks I dump at never even bother looking at

edit: Actually, you'd have to make sure the tokens aren't attracted to magnets too

 

When I went in to dump pennies I told the teller that I already removed the Canadians and she said that's good because they'd have been rejected anyway. Maybe next time I'll add 1 or 2 just to see if shes right.

 

...She's right. I've gotten a ton of free change off those magnets. Use a slightly bent penny or something if you wanna check the reject slot. Or just reach your hand up there and see if it's blocked. It's pretty damn obvious when it is.

 

Where is the reject bin on coinstar machines? I looked on the one in Wal-Mart, and I couldn't find it at all.

 

Lol, it's a slot 2 feet below the tray where you put in the coins. Can't miss it. I don't think it really matters anymore for reasons I have explained in post #7.

If the government starts using steel in pennies and nickels all of these coin machines will have to be retrofitted and have their magnet bars removed. A change in composition will cause more than a headache or two for sure.

 

So does it just pull straight out?

 

Ah, yes I agree with you NOS. Every time I walk by a Coinstar, there's always one or two people leering at the person collecting change. I mean, I don't do it. But it's a sign of the times here in California, Coinstar finds are tough, and I can't get a case of halves to save my life at the bank. My last Coinstar find was a 20 euro coin, a couple canadian dimes and a 56 rosie, and that was last summer.

Got a Silver Roosie and Silver Quarter today from the reject tube! Then skunked on a box of dimes and quarters.

 

I went to a coinstar at Walmart today just to check it out. Took me about 5 minutes to get 6 dollars worth of pennies in it. As for the reject tube, there is no way to get my hand up inside because it is blocked with a metal "wall." I was only able to get like 3 fingers into it. I ran about 30 dollars through the machine at the bank and it took about 20 seconds. Coinstar charges 9.8% here and takes forever. The bank I go to is super fast and is free. I think I'll stick with my bank since I can't get my hand up inside the coinstar reject tube. lol

 

Found a small pile of change in the reject slot at the grocery-store CoinStar this evening. A few chewed-up Zincolns, two copper cents, a quarter with a bite out of it, some recent foreign stuff, a Canadian quarter (2009) -- and a well-worn 1960 Roosie. I took the foreign stuff, swapped a 2010 dime and two Zincolns for the silver and copper, and left all the spare change on the shelf for someone who needs it more than I do.
