Hi everyone, recently I purchased my first coins from the US Mint. I think this will be a fun hobby. I picked up 3 things and got a gold piece which is what I've wanted. Also, I grabbed a Proof Set which reminds me of my grandfather since he had a few. Unfortunately I don't have the dough right now for a 1 once gold coin, but got a 1/10 to satisfy for the time being. During the winter I hope to get the American Buffalo 1 once from the US Mint which I think is around $1900. Thanks, great forum and glad to join. 2011 American Eagle One-Tenth Ounce Gold Proof Coin (AK4) https://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=16270&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10118 2011 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin (1P6) https://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/w...ctId=16262&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=13738 2011 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™ (SV4) https://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/w...ctId=16216&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10211
:welcome: Nick, You got some nice Starter Collector coins there. Make sure your on the US Mint email list for New Releases. Start saving up for that Gold Buffalo, they are awesome coins :thumb:
Just don't handle those coins while you're eating potato chips. Great purchases, the proof AGEs are beautiful coins. I wish they'd make fractional buffalos again, so more of us could afford them.
Yea i can second that US mint is losing a lot of $$. as people are turning to foreign mints for fractional 999s.
thanks guys for the replies. I just purchased a couple of more coins. When I saw the Austrian coin, I had to grab it due to my heritage. And the Silver Buffalo will do til I have the money for the 1 once gold coin. oh yeah, since I've been getting into coins, I watch Coin Vault TV all the time.. haven't bought anything from them yet since I think their prices are a bit high, but it is interesting to watch as a newbie. 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round (.999 Fine) http://www.goldmart.com/1-oz-silver-buffalo-round-999-fine.html 2011 1 oz Austrian Silver Vienna Philharmonic http://www.goldmart.com/2011-1-oz-austrian-silver-vienna-philharmonic.html
A lot of us here watch Coin Vault and perhaps Rare Coins from Barry Chappel (I get him on DirecTV, don't know if cable carries him though). Their prices aren't merely "a bit high", they are outrageously overpriced. That being said, it still is fun to watch them when there's nothing else on TV.
Here's some eBay listings of the US Mint's release of the 2001 Buffalo: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l2736&_nkw=2001+silver+BUFFALO+ I like the 2 coin set.
Since you are just starting out in collecting coins, might I suggest you pick up the latest copy of: The information is the best, the price guide is useless, and will help you with your new found hobby.
thanks for the info. I will probably keep the number of coins to a minimum, maybe 5-10 per year if that. I'm interested in quality more than quantity. If I get a 1 once gold coin per year that will be enough for me to put together a nice box to leave when I die in the coming years.
Purchasing from the Mint is fun. I plan to start buying a silver proof quarter set and complete mint set every year in the future. I actually started buying past mint sets whenever I get a good deal to look for high quality unc'd coins. Most 70s, 80s and 90s mint sets are fairly inexpensive right now.
