Quite new to collecting, so I am not sure if opening a roll of coins, ie: 2009 Lincolns is a good idea. I got eight rolls for Christmas (YAY!), and I have been dying to tear into them and check them all over. I have been reading about some varieties with the FY coins. So the question is to open or not to open. Thanks.
Here, Go buy 400 2x2 holders for pennies > open them > Them put them in holder. And :welcome::welcome:
you can do that or you can buy 8 plastic rolls from a local coin shop for anywhere from 50-75 cents each? go buy a few of those and then crack open the rolls. i keep 90% of my bu rolls in them so they dont tone unless i want toned coins, then i keep them in the original rolls. just my .02 cody
Woohoo. I'm going hunting. I will purchase something first to put them in so that they will be protected. Thanks for the quick responses. 2x2s for anything special I might find, and plastic rolls for the rest.
You didn't specify the kind of 2x2's you'd be using. Are they Saflips or the staple type? If you're using the staple type, it would be a good idea to get a flat-cinch stapler to reduce the risk of damage to a coin from a staple scratch. http://www.officemax.com/office-sup...ne~1^region~1^param~return_skus^return_skus~Y Chris
Yup! Tear them open and relish each one. Look for any variations and learn. Then tube them up and add them to your collection. Learn to love coin collecting! There is nothing on earth IMO like collecting coins / Nusmismatics. But remember that you make your own rules. I am one that has the reputation of taking a 1803 PCGS AU Draped Bust Cent and breaking it out of the slab to put it in my 7070 Type Set book, which is "something no one should ever do under any circumstances." But I do not care about the $$$, but the joy! What a coin and what a pleasure to hold it between my fingers and place it under my 25X stereo microscope for a closer look without any plastic between me and her! What a pleasure to smell it. Yes smell it!!! An 1803 Draped Bust Cent does have a scent. Try it sometime. If you can catch it through that thick plastic. (Perhaps I should change my forum name to "The Smeller"). And finally feel that light snap as I fit her into her proper place within the 7070 Dansco and slid the plastic cover over her face. And I can pull her out at any time and enjoy this coin and wonder at her history. Almost back to the very beginning of our Republic. I wonder where she has been? Who spent her? In whose pocket did she reside? What child bought candy with her? Again, live by your own rules, and you will love this hobby and it will reward you in turn. Don't get into what other people think is right. Do what you love to do and do it well. Open any rolls you desire to. Reveal the mysteries. Find the treasures. Most of all enjoy!
Thought I may add, if they're nice and shiny don't touch the surface with your fingers. Get a loupe so you can check for varieties, plastic tubes for the common ones and 2x2 cardboard or mylar flips for the better ones.
Very good advice. That copper will take your fingerprints and turn them into distasteful blemishes in just a few days! Get you a pair of nice white cotton gloves. Super cheap!!! http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Industri...155?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5646681e9b
Thanks so much for the replies. Luckily, I received a pack of gloves, and a 10x loupe with my coins, so I am good to go. I did open one roll, and boy, they look so beautiful. I don't know what it is with the 2009's, but they caught me eye. Later today, I am going to a local coin shop for the first time. I will get some coin tubes. I am a bit nervous, I know I am quite naive on the subject of coins, but hey, I am not afraid to admit it, and I want to learn.
If they have try to get the square Numis tubes. I'm not sure how the round ones are but I have heard they shrink around the coins and crack more easily.
