    Well, here's the policy:

Certified coins When listing a certified coin, the coin must be certified by one of the following authorized grading companies:
If the coin listed is not certified by one of these grading companies, the coin is considered raw and uncertified and is subject to additional requirements for sale.
In addition, listings for certified coins must include an image of the item, showing the coin in its graded holder. The image needs to be clear and the grading company, grade, and certification number should easily be readable.
Note: Coins minted before 1980 must show the full front and back of the holder. Coins minted in 1980 or after must show the full front of the holder.

This is good to know. I don't sell coins on eBay, so I never really paid attention to the guidelines, I just purchase what fits my collection and budget. Thanks for the info.

You can go through the listings and report them as you see fit. They might start pulling some of those PCI auctions.

This is not the first time ebay has changed the rules for listings. When they first started they were very strict with the listings. Now you can type in almost anything and they wouldn't care as long as they get their fees.

eBay's rules haven't changed. Some sellers just ignore them and get away with it because no one reports the auction.
eBay will cancel auctions in violation of their listing policies if they are notified.

What’s the deal with PCI anyway? I don’t buy coins in their holders, but that’s probably because I don’t see them much. Did they have an issue with reputation that caused eBay to make that decision?

If you really want the reason, it is simple. Because I do not report then. I report all the other slabs (except dominion), but I am not reporting these because I believe they are true third party graders even if they may not be recognized as the top graders out there. What you have managed to prove is only that ;;;i am virtually the only one reporting them. At this moment, eBay is way behind, but you will not find SGS, NNC, etc. more than a couple days old. They are only up through 12-30 now, I assume due to the holidays.

I don't post a lot here, but I'll chime in a bit on this one.

I have been collecting since the days of ANACs papers (Sheesh! Did I just date myself? Gotta stop that!) and I have both purchased many and sold (not so many) coins on eBay since about 1998. I have never had an issue as I stick to sellers with good reps and fair return policies. I also seem to have a knack for grading coins pretty well even through photographs (Love Photograde). So whether eBay changes the rules or even has them is not really a big concern for me, however I am very concerned about others that do purchase coins and have been taken by unscrupulous or even outright dishonest sellers. Chaps my hiney in the extreme!!! And I have been known to report scores of auctions that I felt fit that category. Most of us remember the 100's of SGS "certified" coins that were on eBay not many years ago? Just a tragedy. Here is an example for those who don't:

    6622301483_069cde6b14_o.jpg

I always thought that eBay and $G$ were in bed together in that they did produce a $teady $tream of income for eBay and eBay was reluctant to do anything what$oever to $top them. In 2007 something changed and one of the great things that the "new" eBay rules have accomplished is to shut down this company from posting their auctions. Howbeit not until after multiplied thousands of people had been duped. Other "slabbers" were also stopped. IMO, this was a great thing and helped to clean things up a bit.

Most of the legitimate certified coins I have purchased from eBay have been for my 7070 TS Book and I broke everyone of them out of their slabs after taking very detailed macro photographs (I am a also an old amateur photographer) with a pro camera. I know that is anathema to many here, but I am a collector not an investor and there is just something about those slabs that act like a prophylactic to keep me from the full pleasure that coin collecting gives me. The only ones I keep in the slabs are the ones I know are going to be trading fodder or that I don't need for a catalog.

With all of this said, eBay is eBay and they will always change the rules when they discern the need$ to do so. Therefore is behooves us, as those that love this hobby, to be diligent and even custodians and stewards when necessary and not allow the "rules" and their changes influence us in any regard. Ebay is just a tool. That is all. It puts buyers and sellers together and you have to admit is it much faster than the old Auction Sheets that those of us who have been around a while used to wait for in the mail.

Just my 2 cent piece! ;)

One last thought: One of the best things about CT are those here that really love Numismatics! I have learned so much from people that willingly share their experience and knowledge. This group is one of the things that keeps me fervent about collecting. It's like being at a great coin club meeting 24/7.

Best wishes to you all and a happy and blessed new year.

    My compliments,

    Richard

The Rules That Stopped eBay Almost Dead

As a past eBay Silver Level Preferred Power Seller, I recall there was an AU/BU type statement in a large number of my auctions, which were all closed by eBay personnel because of a complaint. I tried to contact eBay personnel to determine/rectify the problem, but was unable to make a personal connection.

Upon eventually contacting someone, I was provided with an access phone number and code for 24/7 connection. I was informed by the customer service technician that eBay lines and sellers had been inundated with complaints about listing titles, where the company was unable to conduct proper business. I was informed that the cost to answer calls, investigate, cancel auctions, and deal with their clients had become financially prohibitive. They had to reduce phone access by observer complainants, and implement an aggrieved process to satisfy their clients who were paying for services.

Listings now generally are on the honor system, with the exception of "privacy" policies. In my opinion listings have deteriorated extremely, but eBay generally eliminated the observer problem with limited access, while protecting their clients with protection guaranties. I believe a complainant can still receive some satisfaction if they can contact eBay and adequately prove policy violation.

I found the listing prohibition system to be fantastic for the knowledgeable buyer who buys the product rather than the name. Some fantastic buys were realized when quality coins in less expensive holders were relegated to second class bidding, and dealers could dump their "top tier" junk on eBay. I believe generally that both sellers and buyers have now become educated in realizing that the average consumer has become more informed with the CAC and PLUS type grading additions.

I believe that the general prohibitions are unnecessary, probably also does eBay, as unregulated "brand names" guarantee little. I believe eBay has found that if the clients are protected, business doesn't generally suffer when not policing special interest policies.

From a legal standpoint, I believe that eBay has met the restriction placement Standard, as has our society towards crime, but similarly are impotent when policing.

Agreed... and with the exception of a few "self-slabbers", I personally don't have a problem with listings of "non-authorized" TPG's in the auction title. However, eBay sets it's own rules, and enforces them in a haphazard manner. What bothers me a lot more is the self appointed "policing agents" such as the CFe group, utilizing gestapo like tactics in an effort to "protect" buyers from their own stupidity.

I've got news for you Richard, there are just as many SGS coins on ebay, today, as there ever was.

Maybe even more... right now he's running close to 2,500 auctions with a sell ratio of about 98%.

    The Broken Link

You may receive something different than I, but this is what I've generally received when I access the link you posted. The links provided in this message seem to provide a futile circle of inappropriate choices.

Apparently the direct contact link is unavailable to me. I must use my direct dial access phone number and provided code to contact customer service, which I'll only use if i have a problem which I can't resolve through the resolution services link.

I'm not sure whether a policy change is afoot, but I got a different response the last time or two I used the Direct Reporting URL.

I've direct-reported a dozen or two auctions over the last couple of months; usually, I got an individualized reply (not a form letter) confirming that they'd taken down the auction.

I reported an auction a few days ago, and got an individualized reply confirming that the auction had been taken down, but inviting me to use the "standard" reporting path (starting from the Report Item link on the auction page itself). (This was for an auction that listed "PCGS VG8" in the title and description, but clearly showed a "VG8 Details (Corroded)" slab.)

I reported an auction a day or two ago, and while the auction got pulled, I haven't received a reply yet.

Oops, I just checked again, and I did get a reply -- individualized, like the ones I'd been getting. So perhaps the one "different" reply was just a one-time exception.
