GSC auctions constantly bring more than market trends

I know there has been much talk throughout coin communities about Great Southern Coins. Some criticized the pictures, grading... even shill bidding and so on. What I can't believe is how the coins they sell bring well over comparable coins. Here is a Buffalo Nickel they are selling for $440. The next link is a coin that sold on teletrade for $240. Same grade, same grading service, same date.

Another amazing marketing feat of GSC is that many raw coins command above coins graded higher than the raw. My only speculation is that they have a strong, reliable internet client base.

Last link is the heritage list of sales for 1913 Buffalo Nickels MS 66. And yes, I only looked at the Type One Buffs. I think if one company can make a business like this, there is a future for more to follow. Also, do they have a shop? I don't understand how they have so much inventory. Your thoughts?

  3. I like to think the majority of Ebay buyers as the new HSN buyers if you catch my drift. A lot of people leaving positive feedback to sellers have no idea what they bought in the first place.

How about their junk marketing that they send to your email?

I agree. I forgot to add that in. People just buy with their redbook by their side and get into bidding wars over something they know little about. I have almost given up on ebay. Way better offerings on Teletrade and Heritage to bother with searching through spendable US tender described as errors and other garbage.

I know where you are coming from. I never have won an auction from them and I get the emails. I feel like there is no point of bidding when I put out a strong bid and it goes for twice that amount

  7. I'm assuming you receive that if you buy from them, which I never have.

  8. I am not fed up with Ebay, there are decent coins to find and honest sellers. Just not a lot of them.

I have put a lot of their coins in my "Watch List". But I always find fault with their grading & pics. Then I find a similar coin better coin for a lower price. So far I have never bought from them.

For me not enough, I think there are good enough deals on the auction sites and it is a time saver.

  11. While I agree, you can find nice coins on other sites, Ebay has the biggest market and to completely eliminate them is shutting yourself of to a lot of potential coins.

my only negative feedback ever on Ebay went to GS. the pictures somehow look great but the coin i got just wasn't up to snuff. and I let them know. boy did they give me a hard time over the negative feedback! I got a chuckle out of it. I just skip past their listings.

How many of you would recognize the name aboncom from ebay ? His feedback is 99.4% with 177,194 feedbacks. Think you'd buy from somebody like that ? Here takea look at his feedback - http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=aboncom&ftab=AllFeedback

Looks stellar doesn't it. 5 star rating across the board, all his feedback positive for the most part. Looks like a great guy to buy from.

Now look at what he sells -

I don't recall the coin, but I did in fact buy an AT Bust Half? from them a while back. Mark Feld and Doug set me straight. For a while I was getting emails saying "UNDERVALUED COIN!!!" LOL

About 8 years ago, I bought an 82 commem from Abon that was supposed to be a PF70, but when I received it, I noticed that Washington's horse had three "nostrils". Naturally, I sent it back for a full refund and have never bothered to look at their offerings since.

But over 15,300 Positive feedbacks in 12 months !

That my friend is the story, not the negs.

edit - and you should look at the total feedbacks too. GSC has 65,000. aboncom has between 100,000 and 500,000. And he still has over a 99% feedback rating.
