Ancestor Challenge Timeline I came up with an idea to collect birth year coins of my ancestors. 1832 for my Great Great Grandparents ( Fathers side of the family ) Now to work on some of my other ancestors from my "Family Tree Maker" computer program. My 700th post!
I just added a 1832 Capped Bust Half Dime (mintage 965,000) to my Great Great Grandparents birth year collection. :smile Anybody else collecting any birth years of your ancestors?
Cool idea. I put together sets for my mother and father and gave to them, but luckily they were born in 1942 and 1944. I know of a few very famous numismatists who started out trying collect their birth years, one unfortunately was born in 1799, (tough cent), and the other in 1873.1873 was a very interesting year numismatically.
I thought about putting together sets for my parents, but Mom was born in 1930, and US coinage was a bit sparse during the 1930's. ("How come Mom doesn't get a dollar OR a half-dollar?")
1892 birth set hi again long time reader, 2nd time posting. i did this with my grandmothers birth year. 1892. got them all but the 2.5 dollar gold piece. its a nice set. i know what your thinking, how about some pictures!!! don't have a camara. love the forum, even after 50 years of collecting i'm still learning!!!!
Nice work RobbyR, :thumb: :welcome: Do you have a Printer/Scanner that you could scan some of the coins? My Half Dollar & Half Cent were scanned.
I helped my cousin out, he wanted to do his grandfathers. His date was 1931, very sparse as well, just cent, nickel and dime excluding very expensive gold. I had a nice AU nickel laying around I gave him for the set.
Mcblzr i'll have to try that. one of the kids probably knows how!! i forgot to mention how nice your half and half penny is.
McBlzr- I started this a few years ago and am going from my grandparents to current. It equates to roughly a type set however I don't really have enough family to make it a full type set so I make it up as I go. I enjoy the variation on it. My local coin shop had never heard of someone doing it and they appreciated the approach, too. Thanks for the story and the reminder! -L
1832 Quarter This year of Capped Bust Quarter is not the easiest to locate. 320,000 mintage First images with my scanner Second images from my Kodak Camera Now to find a decent 1832 DIME !
1832 Capped Bust DIME * I got this dime in the mail today. Another hard to find one with a mintage of 522,500
This sounds like a cool project. Unfortunately our family don't really keep in touch and plus my grandparents are deceased.
? ? ? Now for the big question Should I use my NGC membership to get all these 1832s slabbed for a Custom Set ? I want to preserve them for the ancestor historical value rather than looking for increased $$$$ value
I only started a couple of years ago, and I decided to start my collection with coins 100 years before my birth, both US and world. I may get a set from my birth year, but it may be a foriegn set. i never thought of collecting family member birth year coins, but it is a cool idea. I collect in vf so as not totax the budget too bad, and last year i did not add much, but i am back at it now. Lokking for an 1872p right now Del
my grandmother was born in 1916 and my grandfather was born in 1913 his father was born in 1856 i'd have to sell everything i own to even try these year sets.
Well, I picked up another 1832 Capped Bust Half this week. It was obviously cleaned, but has unique character. Looks like it has some die breaks on the reverse, & maybe a small one on the obverse. When I compare the "D" in UNITED from my first 1832, it lines up differently to the "D" above the "E" Plurbibus on this most recent 1832 CBH. I have read about the different variations of the die pairs, but I don't have a book on them. Mintage for all 1832 CBH was 4,797,000. This is my 1000th post !
