DSCF3135.jpg DSCF3136.jpg DSCF3137.jpg DSCF3140.jpg Hi, I love toned coins and I thought I would share a few that I just bought. I bought a estate with old W. Raymond boards fulled with Unc coins with lots of them toned.I have been sending them in to be graded with some problems and some great grades also. Enjoy DSCF2873.jpg :)

By problems do you mean the TPG has labeled some AT?

Yes, Only the peace dollar in this group was slabbed as artificial toning, but other coins that NGC said were AT I had to send to PCGS to get a grade. Will send all from now on to PCGS. Jim

I think they look NT to me, Maybe NGC sees something I don't (obviously they do to grade it as such) but still they are great looking coins. I think if I had the cash I would break it out and resubmit, but that is me.

In most cases it all but impossible to discern AT from NT based on pictures, even for the most experienced. But even in hand there is absolutely no way to say with certainty that a given coin is or is not AT. (There are exceptions for those really bad AT jobs that even a novice can see.)

But when it comes to one TPG refusing to slab a coin and another agreeing to slab that same coin, what you have to understand is that the TPGs (NGC and PCGS) vie with each other constantly, always trying to get the collecting public to switch over and use their respective services. So when NGC get particularly tight with grading toned coins, PCGS will loosen up and slab many of those rejected by NGC. And when PCGS gets particularly tight then NGC will loosen up and slab many of those rejected by PCGS. The same thing happens with the numerical standards. It's a game they play with each other with the goal being to get the other guys business.

So over the short term, don't pay a whole lot of attention to it. Because next week or next month it'll probably change. What you should be looking at is how each company has been doing things over a period of many years. For it is only then that you will see that actual differences between the two companies.

those are some great pieces. the only reason i can think they would say AT is because they havent seen much like it? i think theyre all great. i got a 1831 half like yours with the toning but a bit more worn.

I can't say for sure if any of those coins are NT or AT. But, I can tell you that they are beautiful. I would be proud to display any of them in my collection. If you are happy with the price you paid for them, I think you got an excellent deal.

I am very happy with the coins and hope to find more for my collection. I just thought I would share them with you guys at coin forum as out here in Rapid City, SD there are not that many coin collectors and are dealers in this area only seem to care about scrap gold or silver bullion. I just bought a NGC 1897-S xf45 Barber Quarter for gay sheet. The dealer down town offered the guy $200 for a coin ( according to the guy I bought the coin from) that sheets for $440. There is a coin dealer in Spearfish South Dakota that is pretty good.

I would say they all look pretty natural to me in the photos...except the Peace Dollar. Peace Dollar's have very different toning patterns than other coins...the toning pattern on this one is more like a Morgan Dollar...and Morgan and Peace Dollar's tone very differently.
