Some of you have heard that a package going to ICG sent 4/29 with 78 coins was or is still unaccounted for. I filed a claim on May 21 with back up paperwork from auction sales, current listings and values according to recent sales on all 78 coins. Now I recieved two letters one went to ICG asking if they got the package which is a no, still. The other letter wanted a complete description of each item....purchase date....and "COST" of each item sent. Todays value was somewhere between $4265 and $4475. Under $60 per coin average at minimuim grade I thought they would grade as. They would be worth a lot more in the "better" grades I am sure some would have recieved. I put a value of $3994 on it as I never in a million years thought that the package would go AWOL. The cost as some of them as I cherried them out of original rolls or bought as a regular type rather than as a "special" type was under $2000 under $25 per coin. I wonder what the Post Office will pay. In my letter I did point out that some of the coins were purchased in the 1990's. I also stated that it took me years to collect the coins and I would rather have them back than the bucks. I wonder what they will do?

Hi, this is similar to what happened to me last year on a package I sent to PCGS. When the claim was filed, the post office would only give me what I had insured them for.

I just wish they find the coins! If not if they get me the $3994 I insured it for that would give me some money to find others treasures! Did they give you what you insured it for? Thanks DC

I'm interested in hearing how this works out for you. I wish you the best of luck. I have been considering selling some silver but just haven't gotten around to it. I was planning on using Registered Mail since it was cheaper than UPS or Fedex.

This really stinks Darrow, as I've read the other thread that you've posted. The dang coins haven't shown up as of late? Most dissappointing as as I've always read that 'registered' was a safe and sure way to go. I feel for you old (dear) fellow. What a freakin' nite mare of a situation.

I will use USPS again....I mailed from a small post Office because they never have lines. I guess I should have used the big Post Office.. They mailed the "Hope" diamond by regristared and it got there OK

Thanks. A lot of work to get every coin priced. Plus, I know some of the coins were going to be high grade. I asked NN if they were interested in the story but the Editor said that it would not be something to promote the hobby. The mailing is suppost to be signed for all the way along. The Post Master from the little post office was scared that she could lose her job. When I mailed the claim in from the big post office I told the clerk what happened that Post Master came out upset said that they mail $40,000 watches and have never had a loss. She got clamed down when I told her it was the small post office across town that "lost it". She said people get fired over this.

Yes, I got what I insured them for minus the cost to ship them.

I will never use the USPS for anything important, they have lost too many of my eBay packages, both receiving and sending. I would use FedEx. One time, USPS lost my package, then delivered it back to me, not to the sender, the same day I got the insurance check for it. Too bad I had to return the check.

Hmmm... in over 13 years of selling "stuff" on eBay (thousands of transactions, mostly comicbooks), and using USPS allmost exclusively, never had a single package lost. One package did end up in Puerto Rico on it's way to California. That one gave me heart palpitations.

In my letters to Post Office I WOULD rather have the coins back than a check. I do look everyday on their website to see if by chance it may have moved. Thanks DC

It is. You can't say they NEVER lose a registered mail package, but the loss rate is MUCH MUCH MUCH lower than any other shipping method.

that's your choice, but remember this, the post office insures collectible coins and small high value items. FedEx doesn't. (Neither does UPS.) So if FedEx loses your package of coins all you get is a "Sorry about that." (If you paid for insurance you will also get your insurance fee back.)

And whoever last signed for that package at the post office you mailed it from will be held responsible for it. If the PO has to pay for it they will be required to reimburse the PO and will probably lose their job over it. If they find a pattern of losses they will probably go to jail as well. this is why Registered is so safe. NO ONE wants to be the last person to have signed for a missing Registered mail package, so they make darned sure stuff gets signed for when it is passed on and losses almost never happen..

In 2002, I lost an 1855-D 5 dollar gold coin when I sent it to PCGS for a regrade. (PCGS EF-40 holder, VF-20 coin in my opinion). A little while later, a postal worker was arrested for stealing coins at post office used by PCGS.

It took two tries for the Boston main post office to give me the correct form for filing a claim. The post office inspector assigned to my claim was quite demanding when it came to proof of value. I had insured the coin for what I had paid for it and provided both a record of that transaction and photographs of the coin, but I eventually ended up sending a printout from a Numismedia price guide and signing an affidavit of value.

All told, I got a check for the insured amount after about 4 months. USPS did not refund the postage, naturally.

They Charged you the shipping on the stuff they lost? If that was a private company or a small business that would sound like fraud. But what can you do... Sorry to hear about everyone's misfortune.
