I recently inherited some coins that belonged to my Grandfather etc. etc. I'm sure you've heard this part before so I wont go into that. However among them, mostly fairly common coins, I found an 1888 Indian Head penny. On closer examination it looks to me as if it might (stress might) be an 1888/7. I realize the coin is pretty worn but it would still be nice to have if so. Not looking for an appraisal just an opinion other than my own. Thanks in advance for time and trouble. I'm afraid these pictures are the best I can do as I don't have a loup (magnifying thingy). The third eight doesnt seem to be consistant in shape with the others as well as having marks on it, upper right area for instance and the centers seem smaller on it too. Of course it could be just some wishful thinking on my part also. Dont ask why the heads side came out red I dont know, something in my digital camera I guess.
Sorry to say but I don't think it's an 1888/7. The three indicators are a cud above the T or E in UNITED, some visible parts of the & on the bottom and upper left of the last 8, and a weak tip of the second to last feather. I don't see any of these, and the second to last feather on yours shows no weakness. Check out: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1139&Lot_No=151
The cent shown in the HA url is for the Snow-1 variety of the 1888/7. There is also a Snow-2 variety of the 1888/7 which usually lesser price, http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1122&Lot_No=7328 It is recognizable by the bump in the upper loop of the last "8" and a pointed spur ( base of a misplaced 1 )out of the front bead. Unfortunately, I can't tell from the photo Jim
Weellll I guess it was just some wishful thinking on my part. I appreciate that you took the time to look and reply. Thanks.
