If you were given a 5 pound bar of pure gold and were allowed ONE leap back to 1 specific place and date in time to spend 8 hours there. Then you have to return to your real time with whatever you are able to carry in a single backpack.
To what place/date would you leap ?
What investments would you make (if any) while you are in the past ?
What would you bring back with you ?

Wouldn't need more than eight seconds. Go back to birthplace and time of [insert political figure here*]. Pound said figure's head with gold bar. Return to corrected timeline.

    * Was going to go with the standard "Hitler", but didn't want to risk getting dinged for being too political.

I think he is looking more for the investment part. And I'm thinking 5 lbs of gold is about 90k now so I'd have to get something worth more then that now :D
    Say 1909 and pick up:

    50 rolls of 1909S VDB's for $25
    50 rolls of 1909S Indians for $25
20 Lewis and Clark Expo Gold for 1 oz of my gold
    50 Lafayette Dollars for @$100
    10 1848 $2.5 gold coin
    20 1893s Morgans
    Probably some other stuff :D

You know I was thinking of going back to 1909 myself. Then I started thinking , I only have 8 hours and 5 pounds of gold. Maybe I could go to Denver Colorado in July 1860. I would try to find someone from the Clark , Gruber & Co private minting firm. In exchange for expedited service , I would offer to trade them double the weight in pure gold for any and all 1860 Twenty Dollar coins they had that were already struck. If they were able to strike some more for me within my few hour time limit , that would work too. So I would return to my time with the coins and any left over gold from the original bar.

First, we need to exchange this 5 oz for money BEFORE WE LEAVE. Then, go back to 1933, and buy as many 1933 Double Eagles as possible before they are melted. Then, hide all but 1-10 of them, and sell them for 15 million. Good idea!

1805. i would attempt to find and bring back everything i could find being used as early american coinage. 1804 & 1799 large cents. some flowing hair & draped bust dollars. some early gold. you could bring back a plethora of history.

There are theories that going back in time and altering history could have devastating effects for the future (our real time). I don't know why anyone would want to risk that. Personally, I'd rather go to the future and buy lottery tickets with the winning numbers for a few dozen drawings that have not yet taken place for the Powerball.

Go back a hundred years. Go to a bank in a big city, get as many rolls of coins of all denominations as I can carry, come back, have the greatest roll-searching day ever.

  14. Chris: That would not work. You would still have to return back in time for the Powerball drawing, which would then alter history and have devastating effects on the future as you noted. I thought you might want to go back to 1895, work at the Philadelphia Mint, and pick up a few newly minted Morgan dollars. :D :smile TC

TC, it wouldn't be altering history because the future has not yet taken place. Changing the past alters the future if the future has already occurred, but if the future has not yet taken place, there would be nothing to alter.
