You've mentioned some good ones there. I love Walking Liberty halves, and Morgans. Mercs are great too, and may be a good option for a collector on a budget.

The American Silver Eagles are not expensive, they're beautiful coins and bullion silver to boot.

I have a thing for BU Mercury Dimes myself. Can't seem to have enough.

You mentioned some very good options. I would also advise looking into 19th century type coins, such as 2 and 3 cent pieces, because they are unusual and relatively inexpensive compared to some more widely collected issues.

RE: starting collection

I suggest Lincoln cents. they're fairly cheao, and they still show up in pocket change every now-and-then.

A very limiting factor might be the amount of time and money you have to
spend on collecting. Many times, a person starts with one area and is then
"converted" to another. Several collecting areas require either a large
expenditure of money OR a large expenditure of time to gain knowledge
to cherry-pick varieties. I would suggest perhaps the Lincoln cent series,
or even limit it to Lincoln Memorial Cents as there are many varieties and
can usually be obtained in high quality coins. This could expose you to
mintmark variations, double dies, handling of coins, etc., all good aspects
for any future collecting. I also like the Jefferson 5 cent series for similar
reasons. When funds are tight, these 2 series have the greatest chance
of something nice being found in bank rolls. They also present a large
variety for grading skills. If money is not so much a problem, I like high
end Buffalo 5 cents, what a beautiful coin! Having money is wonderful,
but knowledge is necessary to be successful.

What predcarn said exactly. I would suggest you find a place to acquire a Whitman, Dansco or Littleton Album though to give yourself a place to put what you collect.
A cheap way to get started is to first go to a bank and buy a bag of cents. $50 a bag. After you go through them you just return them to a different bank so they don't get mad at you. You can do the same with Nickels.
