Buffalo Nickel - 2 Feathers Variety

"Most collectors of U.S. coins are familiar with the 1937-D Indian Head, Three-Legged Bison 5-cent coin on which the bison's right foreleg was abraded off a die by a Denver Mint technician's overpolishing.

It is a highly sought after variety that can bring significant money in all grades.

Yet unless you are a staunch collector of U.S. coin varieties or are an aficionado specifically of Indian Head 5-cent coins, commonly called Buffalo nickels, you may not be aware of a variety that involves the portrait of the Indian on the obverse. It is called the Two Feathers variety."

1944-P Jefferson 5-cent coin on nickel planchet

"Due to the critical need for the metal in armament production for the war effort, the United States Mint removed nickel from 5-cent coins beginning Oct. 8, 1942. Before this change, the composition was 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. From late 1942 through December 1945, the Mint used an alloy of 56 percent copper, 35 percent silver and 9 percent manganese for 5-cent coins (nickel-less "nickels").

However, at least one pre-war copper-nickel planchet apparently was struck between the Jefferson dies in 1944 ........."

Buffalo Nickel Struck in Copper

"The only known Indian Head 5-cent coin struck on a full-size copper planchet sold on eBay for $12,500 Oct. 22."

"Seller Mike Byers of Byers Numismatic Corp. said that the coin, graded About Uncirculated 55 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of America, is likely a U.S. Mint test piece."
