I look for items that are completely overlooked and unwanted and therefore relatively inexpensive, but with potential collector value. Up until recently, the gold commemorative coins fit this description. I bought a number of them [slabbed and original packaging] from the 1980s below bullion value, when it was much lower than today's bullion value. They aren't really scarce enough to attract attention now, but may be appreciated more by the next generation of collectors [or the one after that]. I found it odd that you could buy a PF69 gold commem under melt value, but a PF69 gold bullion coin would sell for a premium. I'm not sure that pricing will remain in the future. The gold commems from the 90s have lower mintages [a plus] but higher premiums [a minus].
Platinum coins might be worth a look because the mintages are low. The half ounce gold eagle might appreciate because it is the only $25 denomination ever made and will be needed for a lot of future type sets.
I think the silver commems are overpriced, probably because they are more popular.
