I was flipping through my 2011 redbook, and the 1983 Washington quarter, both Philly and Denver had high numbers. In MS-63, they're listed at 21 and 10, respectivly. But, they both had mintage figured over 600 million, which was about the same as other years. Why is this one year so much more valuable than others?
The only thing I can see is that there were no 1982 or 1983 mint sets made. That must be it because if you look the price of the dimes and nickels are generally higher also. But the half isn't-but they never really circulate. Lack
Here's a gem (65) for $65. $1 per grade?! http://cgi.ebay.com/1983-P-25C-WASHINGTON-QUARTER-MS-65-NGC-CERTIFIED-/390261313342?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5add630f3e Not that expensive but 66's go for a pretty penny. Don't let the mintage fool you, Most collectors don't know about the expensive gem bu coins released in 83 go for surprisingly alot. That's because there was no 1983 mint sets, therefor most coins released that year went into circulation. The only way your going to find a gem or even choice bu quarter, dime, nickel, cent, or half is to look through original rolls that someone might have saved. I bet all the gem bu coins from 1983 are going to be treasures like the '09-S VDB someday.
Yeah, in 82 and 83 the only way to get a mint set with all the coins was to visit each mint seperately in person and buy that mint's 'souviner set' from the gift shop inside the mint itself. So you would have to travel to Denver and Philly each year and take the mint tour. I lucked up and bought a complete 1983 "set" compiled of both souviner sets, off eBay, last year for 7 bux. I guess the seller assumed that the 83 "set" was worth only as much as some of the other sets in the 80s. ??? I picked up a 1982 set that was put together by a coin magazine at that time and given to new subscribers as a gift. Got that set for about the same money, but the coins were junk. It looked like the magazine employees just pulled the 82 coins out of their pockets and sealed them in plastic film.
I want to work on a project to where I can complete my own mint set from 83 in MS-65 NGC slabbed. I've always planned to, ever since I found out. But they are rare..
Hello, so I have both 1982 p and 1983 p quarter can u give me some advise on what I can do with them please. I'm rather new to this, and I've had more then one coin collector jerk me around..
In order to be valuable, the coins have to be high grade uncirculated. Circulated 82 and 83 quarters are worth face value. Post a picture if you can.
Well these have been circulated considering I attained then frim a change dispenser at a grocery store.. there's always a catch..dang it! I found a 1970 s penny and was astonished when I looked it up and found it could be worth hundreds only fir the coin guy near me tell me he would give me 20 mainly because it's the larger print.. go figure.. the funny thing is, I just obtained another one of the same year 1970 s penny! Lol, why can't it be tge 1983 s penny!!? I will keep with it, i appreciate your speedy response. I am enjoying the site, I got caught up in the fall of the Western Roman Empire last night. I was impressed, mainly because I hung in every word, I couldn't put it down, very well composed!
that is MS65 ? nearly makes me want to pull out my hoard of eagle quarters stored away. "nearly" ... but I'm too lazy.
Yes I wouldn't have guessed MS 65 at all. I would be XF/AU. Perhaps some acetone before encapsulation, if that dark stuff is on the obverse and not the holder.
I got 2 pairs of 82D and 83D a few years ago on Ebay for $11.00 per set. I wish I could've found similar prices for the P mints also. Sorry for the poor pics they all seem to have a pink tinge in them.
