BU Roll Buyer's Guide

"Brilliant uncirculated (BU) rolls are a popular way to collect coins today, especially modern issues like the 50 State Quarters. In addition, the significant prices paid in recent years for low population, condition rarities (aka "pop top" coins) have driven many cherry pickers to buy up original BU rolls and search them for high grade specimens worthy of certification. Notwithstanding the fact that finding such coins are longshots, truly original rolls frequently sell at auction for several multiples of the usual BU roll price on the chance that certifiable, high-grade coins might be found."

"Together, both movements have created a wide awareness of the BU roll market. However, from the questions we hear everyday, it is clear that few people really understand the processes through which BU rolls are handled as they flow from the Mint to the ultimate consumer or collector. Similarly, the queries we receive make it clear that the terminology used in the roll trade is often misunderstood and very frequently misused, even by experienced buyers and sellers. Through this feature we hope to debunk some of the more common myths and provide a better understanding of the processes involved."

1883/2 Shield Nickel - by Howard Spindel

The 1883/2 Shield Nickel is one of the most frequently misunderstood and misattributed United States coins. Very frequently a nickel which is not a true 1883/2 overdate is sold as an overdate. This leaves the buyer with a common coin at an expensive price, and inflates the seeming availability of the true 1883/2 overdate.

I hope that the information available on this website will help the reader understand the 1883/2 Shield Nickel, and provide the reader with the ability to accurately attribute them.

Most collectors have heard about it, few know much about it. The following links will lead to articles about the coin.

The Coin Page

" I started this site because I got tired of seeing images of coins on the web which were NOT available for me to use. The copyrights and conditions and sometimes prices charged made the images all but useless. I decided to buy a good digital camera and produce the images myself."

One of the neat things about this site, besides the fact that it has many, many pics of not only US coinage but also world coinage, is that under each image you click on there is a link or two. These links will lead to completed auctions on either eBay or TeleTrade for the same coin. This allows you to not only see the coin you are wanting to check out but to also check it's value.

POCKET CHANGE LOTTERY - by Scott Travers

"All that glitters is not gold. Then again, gold isn't all that glitters.

There are golden opportunities to find worthwhile coins in pocket change today--even though there is little or no silver, much less gold, in the coins that now appear in Americans' pockets and purses.

Pay very close attention to the coins that pass through your hands, and you may be pleasantly surprised--and greatly enriched financially--by what you discover.

I've drawn up an illustrated list of 6 fascinating coins. Most are highly unlikely to turn up. But all have one thing in common: They blend in readily with all the coins around them in the piggy bank or in your change because they have the same basic designs.

You may not always enjoy the thrill of discovery, but you're bound to derive pleasure and satisfaction from the hunt. And who knows: If you seek, you just may find! "

Foriegn Coins Struck By The US Mint

"Foreigners in the Mint - A Mint Error News Exclusive Report"

"US Coinage struck on Foreign Planchets and Foreign Coinage struck on US Planchets"

"The United States Mint struck coins for foreign countries starting in 1833 but did not have official authority to do so until The Mint Act of Jan. 29, 1874 was approved and signed into law. The 1874 act states that the U.S. Mint may mint coins for a foreign country if the minting does not interfere with regular minting operations, and shall prescribe a charge for minting the foreign coins equal to the cost of the minting (including labor, materials, and the use of machinery)."

Hub Design Changes to US Coins

"This is Mike Locke's best attempt to date at a complete listing of all of
the hub design changes to occur in US minor coins (non-gold) of the 20th
century. Minor changes, particularly those caused by injury to the
tooling are not noted. Date logotype changes are not noted unless the
change is obvious."

1964 Coins Minted For Three Years!

"While most collectors believe that 1964 was the last year that the United States Mints struck 90% silver coins for circulation -- 1966 was actually the last year of the 90% silver coinage output for circulation! Specifically, 1964 dated 90% silver coins were produced from January 1964 through April of 1966! According to Domestic and Foreign Coins Manufactured by Mints of the United States 1793-1980, published by the Department of the Treasury/Bureau of the Mint"

U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates, 1774 - 1875

A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation

From the Library of Congress, an on-line searchable database of U.S. Congressional Documents and Debates, 1774 - 1875. If you want to know exactly what went on and how the coinage of this nation came to be - this is the place to look.

Example, by using the Search All Titles function - search the 2nd Congress using the key word, coin, and then on the results page by clicking on the first link - Statutes at Large, 2nd Congress, 1st Session, Pages 226 through 286 and by scrolling down and viewing the summary of page contents you will find the staute for the establishment of the US Mint on page on page 246. On subsequent pages you will find statutes establishing officers of the mint, species of coins to be struck, proportional value of gold to silver - and so on and so on.
