My first Lincoln error

I ordered $50 in pennies last week and was going through them this weekend and I found my first doubled die! It's a 1997 with a doubled ear. I also found 19 wheaties, the oldest being 1937. I can't post any pictures of it because I don't have anyway to zoom in on it.

I thought I would share because it really made my day.

I forgot to ask, on the 1998-2000 wide "AM" pennies, is it only on the philly mint or on the Denver also?

If you want us to see a good picture and have a scanner, use that! It works for me all the time!

yeah, I've got a scanner, but I don't know how to zoom with it. I'll try working with it today and see if I can post a pic.

ok, I figured out how to get a fairly detailed scan. Here she is. You can barely see the doubling at the bottom of the ear. It's much easier to see under a 20x loop(however you spell it). The coloring isn't very good because of the scanner.

Nice doubling. I see some on the nose as well, or is that just a shadow?

the "doubling" on the nose is just a shadow from the scan, but the ear is not.

Hi,
That is definitely the "Doubled Ear" variety, Nice find!! As far as the Wide AM on the 1998, 1999 and 2000 cents, I have not seen or heard of any on the Denver mint coinage. I suspect that the incorrect proof dies were only used in the Philadelphia Mint, but I wouldn't rule anything out. I check every "D" mint coin minted after 1992 for a wide AM. For 1992 and earlier dated Lincoln Memorial Type coinage, the wide AM is normal on cents minted for circulation.
Have Fun,
Bill

Hi,
Just a note, this is a variety and not an error. All coins struck by the doubled ear obverse dies are identical.
Have Fun,
Bill
