A friend of mine found this on their property while digging. Not sure about this coin being authentic because below the chin is a letter R. I have not weighed this yet or scanned the back of it ( I figured somebody on this site has seen one like this to know if it's real or not). The back has a shield with a 8 on one side and s on the other. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
I saw a coin just like this selling on ebay... it is some sort of off metal replica of an 8 escudo, if memory serves right. The mintmark on the back should reflect a small o over a large S, for santiago. As far as replicas go, it is interesting because the devices really aren't even close, which made me think it was something to sell to tourists, or some such.
If it is a replica, its a pretty poor one. Among other things, the gold 8 escuudos (KM#437.1 and 437.2) were only minted from 1788-91 with the final year being listed as "Rare". The first years had the crowned M mint mark, in 1790 it had either the crowned M or an S or S/L, and in 1791 it had only the S or S/L. Also, Charles IV on the real coin and the posted piece probably couldn't even pass as brothers, let along being the same guy!
the spanish mexican 8 escudos featuring king charles IV...there weer 16 silver reales to one gold escudo...the two letters after deo are the assayers' initials & the next letter is the mint mark...if genuine this 87.5% gold coin should weigh 27.07 g & would contain .7616 oz of gold...it could be well worth $1000+ depending on price of gold & wear...i also have a silver that is not worth posting because of serious damage...
I have two of those coins exactly the same as yours. I too am trying to find out the value of the coins. I am new at this . . By one day . . So would appreciate any news you may have. Jackie bonura
@ Rick...I have one with an imprinted R , an S for Santiago, and it shines like copper/gold, my mom has had it for years, and is minted 1792...on back has auspice deo...ro felix...any thing you could tell me about it?
FFFF------A------ K--K ---EEEE F--------A-A------K-K-----E FFF-----AAAA-----K-------EEEE F-------A--- A----K-K-----E F------A------A---K--K----EEEE dont know how else to convince everyone posting the same replica coin trying to see how much its worth
I have one of these coins that appear authentic based on the front but the back is the same as the front-not a crest...does anyone know anything about this?
I think these might have been "spiel marke" type gaming tokens once upon a time? There are an awful lot of them like this which mimic the 8-escudo "doubloons".
