I have heard a few posts that have talked about spooning and i wanted to start a thread on it! If you are spooning then join in! This is where i started I will post images as i advance in my work. Hope you all join in!
Are you actually using a spoon? What's your set up? I am still debating spooning the mutilated franklin half that I found in a roll.
You should have started with a 1964 Kennedy, those make nice rings. The sailors crossing the oceans used spoons from the galley because that's all they had. It's much better to use a small ball peen hammer or tack hammer on a steel plate or vice.
Yes i am using a spoon. Large steel one. I also use a hammer occasionally but thats it. In using a brick as a backstop. I am going to get a worthless half to make one for myself but this one is going to be given to my girlfriend.
So thanks to your inspiration cman I started on the chewed up frankie. Took me about 45 minutes to get the edges down to about a 1/4 inch thick, got some more to go, but I can't take the pinging anymore haha.
Coin rings are neat looking. There are different ways to make them. But spooning would be my last choice.
The ones in the top box. No spooning, just how it's done is something most are not sharing. I know they drill a hole in the center (looking like a washer) and bend the coin to turn it into a ring shape. you can buy them on ebay for $30-$40 range. They look neat, but my birth year's halves don't show the date well enough for me.
No, I didn't make the coin rings. I save images that look educational and save these for use on forums. They teach better than trying to explain something to one.
to bad, there is no way to put a gem in the ring, i got a ton i don't know what to do with. i probably have her birth stone! if you figure out a way, i will send you one.
Here's how to make the top rings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mikLcJmK54&feature=related I've done it this way I had a guy in the machine shop taper a stainless steel rod for me the ring gages are expensive. I wonder where it is I know it was a 64 quarter
I got a half dollar ring on ebay and am wearing it now, just a warning, the design wore off the outside in less than 6 months. I can still see details and the date on the inside after over a year.
huh I though the inside would wear off first and the outside would go first but guess not. They do look cool...
