Found this in circulation about 25 years ago.. Just came across it again. Any guesses on what is going on with it?

It was damaged/altered outside the Mint.

Hi,
I agree 100% . I suspect some form of adhesive.

Looks like it got caught in a washing machine. That's an example of a 'spooned' coin.

Definitely not a spooned coin. There is something stuck to the surface of this coin that you can stoll see through.

Doesn't quite look like adhesive, more like it was dipped in lead. Either way, we're all guessing at some type of post-mint damage.

That stuff on the legend of the coin is the spooned edge which has curled back around. Some of it has flaked off.
Just spend it.

If it me, I’d keep it. It’s just to weird to spend even though it’s altered. |

Recieved my Sept/Oct ErrorScope from CONECA today (they are running a few months behind) anyway I opened it up and there on page 13 was this same looking nickel. They call it a pleated apron and say it is altered after the strike. The verdict is still out on exactly what is done to the coin to give this appearance, but there are many theories.
