Akojen (Amy) and I just finished sorting through our flea market finds from today and... WE WIN! I paid $120 and got well over $400 worth of coins. Most of them in VG to F condition. We picked up an 1865 2 cent piece in VF for $15, an 1876 CC dime in F12 for $10, a roll of Indian Head Cents for $40, 15 War Nickels for $15 in VF to AU and 40 V Nickels in G to VG for $1 each! The one true winner we have is a 1900 V Nickel in a full EF-40 for... yep, the same ONE DOLLAR as all of the other Vs! It's also a good strong strike with all of the letters E PLURIBUS UNUM very bold. Amy tried her hand at grading, for the first time, using the book "Grading Coins by Photographs," and she is a GREAT grader! She hit the mark on everything she looked at. She also said that she was having fun doing it! (She's hooked! Yay!) She made a comment on one of the Indian Cents that "A bear had chewed on it." She wants to find a Flying Eagle Cent to carry as her "Lucky" coin. The guy had 3, but 2 were porous and one had most of the date missing because of damage. He wanted $50 for all 3, but she wants one that's a little better than what he has. The other coin we "passed" on was an 1825 Capped Bust 50 Cent piece in G-4 for $55, but it was damaged on the face with 2 deep scratches. She also said that the seller doesn't have any idea of what he's doing. While all of the coins he had were lower grade, I have to agree with her. He's not checking his coins. I talked him down on every thing by 50% to 75% of what he had marked. I even made an offer on the V Nickels that he said "no" to, but when I put down the holder with the coins he said, "Oh, okay. One dollar each." The only bad part of the day was the temperature. It was 77 when we got there and 92 about an hour later! Texas in the summer can be killer! Ben... (and Amy!)
Texas huh? I live in San Antonio we are at 93 at the moment, and it feels like 100 everyday. What flea market did you go to? I've been to several but never any with coins I could buy! Way overpriced, the seller always knows what he has! Glad to know you got some cool stuff at a decent price :thumb:
We're just North of Dallas. The flea market is The 380 Flea Market on US 380 just East of Denton. Onr guy has coins. He even has slabbed gold from time to time. I never tried to talk him down on anything, so I never bought anything. I bought almost everything he had today, but he didn't have any slabbed coins. As for weather, here's this week... We're moving to NJ later this year. I hope it's cooler there! Ben
Yes, we did! The best part is that Amy was right there with me looking and picking the best coins. We even had it worked out. If we found something that was over priced, I had only $10 in one pocket and she had a $10 and $20. So we could "No... sorry, I'm out of money. Um, sweetie... do you have anything left?" and work together to get the price down. It works really well. I'll go back to tomorrow to see if that seller has anything left at home to sell. Ben
Congrats! Sounds like a good day to me. Team work can really help in those types of situations- Let us know how you made out on the trip back.
