I have now owned this coin for a couple of hours. I present it to you for comments. For my part, I am well pleased. The provenance goes through copperheads which frequent this board so the authentication is more solid than a TPG to me. I am looking at several points which don't appear to fit the attribution as S-189, but could have several reasons for such appearances. 1. The Fraction bar appears to be long, rather than short. 2. The leaf under D, though heavily worn, doesn't seem to extend to the curve of D. 3. The E of UNITED seems tilted right a bit. 4. The middle 7 and 9 seem low like the S-188 but with the spacing of the S-189. 5. B in LIBERTY seems a bit high. One of the Holmes S-189s seems to share a verticle crack through the top right leaves through the Ns of ONE CENT through the right loop to the fraction. This should assure the correct attribution, but I like to get there myself and try to figure out the anomalies. I want to express my appreciation to those who assisted me in converting my Charlotte Quarter Eagles into the copper I never thought I'd get. It's only right that EAC member 1799 should have this addition. Thank you for allowing me to share this exiting moment which I never expected to have. Now gushing moment aside, be brutaly honest with your thoughts, I have a thick skin.
Scratch anomaly 2. The leaf is there, but dark. Scratch anomalies. Each can be explained by wear or corrosion messing with the apparent edges. As usual, anomalies do not stand up to scrutiny. But some day...
If I get a chance later today I will try to attribute it - but first glance I would say the S-189. Still a nice addition to the collection.
When you do this, look at the 1800 Reverse A and 1800 NC-6 Reverse as well. They both have longer fraction bars. Thanks.
I don't know much about old coppers, but I know this is a good date to have. thanks for sharing the coin looks great.
This is for future reference. http://www.icollector.com/1800-1798-NC-6-R6-Overdate-1800-over-1798-with-Styl_i8599378
Here are the reverses from the time frame the 1799 was minted. S is for subject. A is Reverse C of 1799. B is Reverse of 1800 NC-6, C is Reverse A of 1800. It looks more like B to me. But I see things that are there and some things which aren't. Check the fraction bar and the spacing of ED of UNITED. Images of comparison coins from Icollector.com of the Holmes collection.
I think I'm seein the same things you are Marshall, sure looks like the NC6 to me as well. I'd like to see it under a microscope.
congrats. She looks wholesome for the grade. Do you have the 1804 to match (i am partial to the restrikes...love the abused dies)?
I don't YET. I have consigned the rest of my gold to the fellow board member who obtained this for me and asked him to look out for either a 1793 or 1804 for me. By the way, I saw a '1799' on Ebay that I could barely identify as a draped bust. Even MY imagination couldn't make a 1799 out of it.
It does not have the reverse of 1800 NC-6. The key identifying point for that reverse is the top right berry. The stem on that berry joins the wreath well above the point where the top right inner leaf cluster stem joins the wreath. On all the others the berry stem and the leaf stem join the wreath at the same place.
Thank you for that information. Now that I know where to look, it easily excludes the reverse of NC-6 of 1800. I always look forward to your comments. I'm in awe of your knowledge about the series I love.
