you are right, silver quarters ended in '64.

to be honest i don't think its silver, to my knowledge i do not believe anyone has discovered a '66 silver. it could be dipped in silver though..

"Just in case" it is silver, photos would be nice. See if you can get a close-up shot of the reeded edge while you're at it.

There is a possibility this quarter was a proof but got into circulation. I think silver proofs were minted until 1968.

No proofs were minted in '65, '66, or '67, I don't think. Special mint sets, yes, but those weren't silver.

I've seen SMS coins that could be mistaken for proofs. Some get deep cameo and ultra cameo designations. Regardless, only the half dollars were silver, and those were 40% silver clad.

Yes, this is what know, but for some reason i decided that maybe San Francisco Mint made some silver ones in 1968. I highly doubt this is the case and that this quarter is really silver.

It's probably plated.
There are about 15 known 1965 quarters minted in silver. The silver and clad were being minted at the same time during 1965 with five different reverses and three obverses so there are many known mixups. While no silver '66 quarters have been reported it's entirely possible that it did happen.
You'll need to weigh it but I'm confident you'll find it's a "heavy" clad rather than a normal silver.

By the way, pre-1965 quarters aren't pure silver. They're only 90% silver.
They are mixed with copper because pure silver is too soft and pliable, thus making unreliable coinage.

SMS coins, as evidenced by the image I posted, are designated as cameo and deep/ultra cameo. They do not receive prooflike or DMPL grades.
