I use excel and make my own columns such as purchase price, date, etc. As for values, I use the yearly Red Book and have columns for EF-40, MS60, MS63 and MS65 (or what ever you wish). It takes some time. but that is the hobby part I enjoy.

Now...if you want a decent FREE software. Go to Heritage Coin Auctions:

Heritage Auctions LINK

Now sign up and enter your collection under "My Collection"

The best part of this is that current wholesale prices are automatically updated so that you can see how your coin investments are doing. You can enter in the coin, what service graded it if any, how much you paid for it, date you bought it, date you sold it, plus whatever notes you wish to add.

Print out the report for your files OR just keep it stored securly online. Also, Heritage has a "My Want List" and you can see how many other Heritage members have your coin on their wish list. The more the merrier, because if you have to sell, you can see how market demand is (or not) for your coins.

I like it...and again, it is FREE!!!

Midas. Thanks for the website. Just put a few of my coins in there. Very easy to use and the prices are right up to date. Thanks again.

From personal experience, both coin collecting applications for Mac OS X are utter crap.

I've been using Excel for probably three years now, it's great for my collection. I would love to share the templates and all, but my comp with the sheets is out for a few weeks. A few sample templates using excel were on here a month or so ago, try searching for that link.

If anyone here has a copy of File Maker Pro, I will be more than happy to share empty copies of my coin database.

glaciermi -- I looked at your Excel file. That's a lot of manual input!

Here's a screengrab of the coin entry screen for my coin database

It also does list view.

I should point out that the denomination and type fields are both pulldown menus

Thumbs up Coin Collecting Software

Contact www.CarlisleDevelopment.com, It is an all inclusive software for any coin and value/buy/sold/ etal. Many applications,...but it costs money!
Nothing worth using , unless you make your own, is free.
I have had it for 3+ years and I upgrade and update every year for my US collection.
Hope this helps.

This is blatantly not true. Most good software is, as it happens, to be completely free if someone wants to download it and install it. In fact, I'm fairly certain that this forum is being run on completely free software. Duetch Bank runs nearly half its operations on completely free as in Free Beer software, as well as Free as in Free Speach software.

Are you telling me all this is useless because you can download it for free?

Believe it or not, mrbrklyn, there are some excellent proprietary software applications available these days. Just because it's free doesn't automatically make it excellent quality

BTW, my desktops run Mac OS X, Ubuntu, and Windows XP, in that order of usage.

Actually, I don't believe it. In my expereince not a single paid for and restricted licensed peice of software ever did what I needed it to without problems, going way back to DOS 3.0 and my VIC 20.
