To the best of my knowledge nobody knows exactly how or what NCS does to conserve the coins. But in all likelihood it is a dip of some kind.
But there are a great many coins that have been dipped by those individuals with experience and using the right chemical that have also been slabbed by the top grading companies.
The problem with dipping comes in when a person uses too harsh a chemical - or they simply dip it for it too long or too many times - and it strips away the surface of the coin.
As for other cleaning methods besides dipping - without exception they leave traces of damage.
