Hello, I am new to this site but a few weeks ago I came across a 1965 silver quarter, and I know it's silver because of the sound it makes, and the side of the quarter is all silver no copper. I was wondering how rare this quarter may be since they stopped making silver quarters in 1964.
Extremely rare, never have heard of one. You're talking a U.S. quarter? First thing you need to do is weigh it and compare the weight with a 1964 quarter (check the Red Book) for correct weight. Do you have a pic you can post?
I am at work but once I get home I can take pictures and post. I have no experience in coins, I accidently dropped it and that's what caught my attention to the quarter because of the sound, then I decided today to look it up. Couldnt find a single thing of information on it, and I know for a fact it's 1965 and the sides have no other color but silver, so I will have to weigh it too.
In a book I have called "Strike it Rich With Pocket Change," by Brian Allen and Ken Potter, it lists the following error: 1965 Quarter on a Silver Planchet In other words, it is a known error. The test is to compare to see if it is 6.25 grams vs a normal quarter weighing 5.67 grams. Listed value in this book, :EF $2500, AU $3500, Unc $5000. Please post pics and weigh it, and good luck. I'm rooting for you!!!
I've heard of silver 1965 dimes http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=328&Lot_No=9832&src=pr If you really think you have one then get it graded.
This could be a very exciting find...I hope it does turn out to be silver and that you share your findings with us! It sounds promising!
Yes once I get home and post pictures, I will get your opinions make sure its worth getting graded. Thank you all!
You pretty much have to get it graded and post a picture of the coin in the holder. If you don't you might as well change your user id or just leave because you'll get slammed for BS-ing. I believe in innocent until proven guilty but you're hand has been called.
Yeah like I said I have no experience in coins, but I just called the people that I showed it to and they all verified it was 1965 and silver, so I cant wait to get home and show you all.
Hey, leave work already and post some pics (especially of the edge)! :eating: I am really hoping for your sake it is legit and that you make a nice profit. TC
Cupro-nickel looks like 90% silver to the untrained eye. And the copper core on clad quarters can be obscured by the outer cupro-nickel when the blank is punched out. Like fool's gold, this often leads the finder to think they have found something valuable. My money is on the coin being a clad '65 quarter.
He said the sound caught his attention. Silver sound is distinct. But you are playing the odds, sir, because the odds of it being a '65 silver have to be well over 1 million to 1, given that they produced over 1.8bn quarters in 1965. That would mean there are about 1800 in existence.
