Hello, I recently received a bunch of old german bank notes. I was able to find the value of most, or at least what they sell for on ebay. However, this one struck my interest. i found a lot on ebay, but all of them had more numbers in the serial, at least 7. Check out this one, and its serial number. Can anyone tell me anything besides "buy the world paper book"? Also, the serial number is centered, the others seem to be to the left.
No. The different serial number styles are attributable to the notes being printed by different printers. There are three different types of this note -- two large size and a small size. One large size has a different back. (There is a fourth one similar to the small size that has the guilloche on the right instead of the left. That variety is scarce.) This is the small size note. Looking in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money would not have helped because the information about the different printers and the different serial numbers is not found in that catalog. This note in this condition catalogs at 3 euro in the Rosenberg catalog of German paper money.
1922 first issue. The catalog lists three varieties. I can't spot any difference between the first two (grey scale pictures don't really help) but yours looks to be the third variety. The serial number (as you say) is now centred and the two previous varieties also had the serial number under the "10000" under the portrait. Oh, and yours has been reduced in size from 210mmx124mm to 180mmx100mm. Catalog value (2008) VG: $4 VF: $8 Unc: $20 (I see Lettow just beat me to it and with clearer info).
