Hey guys, I'm posting this for a friend who isn't on the forums (yet). He was recently looking to buy this 1893-CC morgan dollar, but since he's new in collecting he asked me for my opinion. Problem is, I only collect Russian coins :rolling: so I'm no help, since I've never even held a Morgan in my hand. But, I figured someone on here would be able to tell me: 1. Is it real? Or some Chinese fake? 2. What is it worth? All help is greatly appreciated! The pictures below is all I have, just seller pics. Links to those same images on photobucket: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/subliminalxtac/cc1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/subliminalxtac/cc2.jpg
Thanks. Any particular features that stand out on the fakes? I tried comparing these photos to some of the 1893 CC morgans on heritage's website, but wasn't sure if any minor differences I was seeing were real or if I was trying to convince myself I'm seeing them
Yep, there's a few, I should have pointed them out in the first post, sorry. The first is, the coin has a grainy appearance. Second, is the date, the numbers 1 and 3 are crude, and don't match the genuine dates. Another thing is the rim between the 1 in the date and first star to the left, see how it looks slightly doubled, this is often a sign of a counterfeit. On the reverse the denticles on the back between the left wing and the second T in States are also a giveaway.
The lettering is off (center). The spacing is wrong, the mint mark is wrong. This is as counterfeit as my old hall passes. Funny thing is, it's not even a good fake. Is it even 90% silver? if it is, that's the value. Melt.
Doesn't look like silver. Chinese never use silver. Only Arabic counterfits use silver. And those fakes are hard to spot.
Fake. Run away. Fast. Don't look back. If your friend really wants a 93-CC that badly, he should stick with one graded by the top 4.
Update Update: So it turns out this coin was offered in an eBay auction well, not that shocking actually. Anyways, here is the link, someone paid $66 for a fake then: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140396298794 Ouch. And I like how the seller says he stands behind his items 100% and does not sell fakes.
The seller has 16 feedback and has no coins for sale other then this one. So he probably does not know it's fake plus 93cc for 66 bucks...tells alot.
I agree, it's hard finding any CC for less than $100. And if that one was real, it would be worth over $1000 in the condition it is in. I think if the seller knew it was real, he wouldn't have started the bid so low, as a 1893 CC Morgan dollar in even G-4 condition would sell for about $150.
I believe I have a 1878 Morgan dollar and Peace 1923 dollar, and I am sure they aren't fake, as I got them from my mother in law in earl 1950's and she had them stuffed in a drawer for a lot of years before that. Do they have any value? I am just starting to organize a big group of coins some of which I have had in my dresser for 50 years. I love just going through them. Thanks for any input.
Another fake??? Same seller, this time an 1889-CC. Based on the "fake" features that gave away the old coin, I would say this one is fake too: http://cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-1889-CC-MorganDollar-Silver-USA-Coin_W0QQitemZ140397313929 Up to $200 already
