Ok, Are PCGS coins worth more then other TPG,S slabs??

PCGS coins? No. You take the coin out of the slab and you wouldn't know the difference.

PCGS slabs? Yes. Many people don't look inside the slab. The slab itself is sufficient for them to pay more.

 

No. The whole "PCGS worth more than NGC" is an urban legend that is usually perpetuated by those selling PCGS coins in the hopes of getting more for the percieved extra value.

While true some coins in PCGS holders have gone for more than comperable coins in NCG holders at auctions like HA. Collectors must look at the coin and the coin only to decide if paying more for plastic is worth it in the long run. It's a case by case basis.

It depends on how the seller spins it depending on who slabbed the coin he is selling.

 

Just check closed auction prices. In most cases, PCGS coins are significantly more.

For an example, I checked 1939-D nickels in MS-67 on Teletrade for the past 888 days (it's easy to type in; that's why.) Here are the prices:

ICG: $95, $90
ANACS: $90
NGC: $150, $140, $130, $160, $130, $260, $130, $150, $170, $230, $160, $210, $160.
PCGS: $525, $400.

The sample size is small, but I've seen this pattern over and over. PCGS coins consistently sell for more than NGC, or any other TPG for that matter.

For many series and grades, the difference is negligble. The market has noted, though, that NGC tends to be a little more liberal with the grades, on average, and it is reflected in the market price.

 

I don't think they SHOULD be more than than NGC slabs. But they usually are.

mpcusa: Why, if you have tried this before, do you think that sentiment has changed since your last poll? How long ago was your last poll? Also, what were the results of that poll? Do you have a link to that poll? What did you say then about this topic and what do you think now? Since you are an MPC dealer and submit notes to PCGS and PMG are you doing a poll on this same thing in paper? Why are you asking this in coin forums? Is there an issue of 'brand loyalty' here with PCGS due to the idea that there's more value built in?

Coins are unique, your hypothetical about comparing two identical coins isn't realistic. Buy the coin not the holder. All TPGs are not the same. We have an idea that there are tiers of quality for various reasons amongst them but that isn't about the coins themselves but rather the service, professionals and other operational issues.

Also, are you working on that online petition to get TPGs to create standardized paper currency holders? When will you be posting that?

Little old ME 'the motivation'? Was I? I don't recall where I stated that there are NO differences? I rarely put such faith in absolute statements as a multitude of factors are usually in play but I will firmly repeat, buy the coin not the holder.

I've acknowledged that earlier in this thread, that the coins are unique and unrelated to your poll inquiry. Also that TPG companies are different for aspects unrelated to coins, some reasons being wholly customer perception, right or wrong, and others being corporate mission, industry competitive, professionalism, et al.

Again I'll say, buy the coin and not the perception that the TPG is driving the price and value, current or future. That's the fallacy of the consumer thinking. Believe that or overpaying for a coin now could be risky for future issues that could topple a TPGs reputation. In that event, the extra value paid for a former reputation would be a waste of money. Pointing to auction records isn't foolproof backup for your poll findings, especially if successful marketing has the consumer mind set backing one TPG over another or all others. Again a point unrelated to the coin or note in the holder.

I'm curious what you mean by "Hopefully it will work This time!!" ? Is it your intention, all in good fun, to foist the topic on people that PCGS are going to bring more money? I'm curious about it knowing you are a dealer that submits many notes to PCGS with a vested interest that they bring greater money back to you in your sales. Is this partly your motivation for the poll? To reaffirm consumer sentiment on the TPG issue and your continued decision to use PCGS over another?

This could also have been a good topic for your TPG Support Group. :smile

 

PCGS coins do seem to go for more than a comparable NGC coin on Teletrade and Ebay, but according to the Greysheet NGC has a slightly higher average than PCGS for coins selling at a percentage of Greysheet prices.

 

From what I have seen, PCGS graded coins do bring more of a premium than NGC graded coins. I have been buying some cents off line and since I am not knowlegable enough to buy raw coins off the bay yet, I have only been buying graded coins so far. On numerous occasions, the exact same coin in the same condition sold for $50 to $100 more just because it was in a PCGS holder.
Also, if you will look at the registry sets on NGC website. NGC registry sets can have PCGS or NGC graded coins. Most of the higher end coins or the more expensive ones are graded buy NGC. The person gets the same points for them in there set but they dont have to pay as much of a premium.
I cant wait to see were this poll goes but I think I already know the outcome.

They do seem to require a bit more attention, but the sellers seem to be more demanding than the coins themselves.

I think the question is wrong - you are asking a question that can not be answered.
In some cases, PCGS coins bring more, and in other cases NGC bring more - at times I'm sure even an ANACS or ICG coin has brought more than either one.....but what has happened is that alot of people have bought into this HYPE that PCGS is the GOD of coins, and you aren't anybody if you don't ONLY use/buy PCGS. This is hogwash and I hope the people here on CT are not drinking the PCGS koolaid.

Buy the COIN not the SLAB.

There seems to be a market consensus that PCGS coins are worth more than NGC. The prices on Teletrade do seem to indicate that. This gives us an opportunity, however. Whenever I can find a coin in an NGC holder selling at a discount to PCGS, but the coin inside the holder looks accurately graded, I buy it, in the hopes of crossing it over to PCGS and selling for a profit. I've already collected a few NGC coins in this manner and I plan to send them in....

Of course, the spread in prices needs to justify the grading costs...
But I still like getting NGC coins that look exactly like PCGS coins (or better) at a lower price!

 

All else equal, I believe that PCGS graded coins are worth more for two main reasons.

First, PCGS Set Registry Sets require PCGS only coins. Accordingly, those who participate in those sets must have PCGS graded coins and that creates additional demand for those coins that otherwise may not exist, it's about the holder and not the coin in some of those cases.

Second, the perception that PCGS is best amongst many (just see the poll in this thread) whether or not such a claim has any real merit, helps to create the reality.

 

While many folks are wise enough to go beyond the slab (label), many aren't. Based on my experiences PCGS slabs for coins bring higher prices than similar coins in other slabs and far more than raw coins of the same grade.
