OK everyone, here is a fun one: This is a 1985-P Jefferson Nickel that was struck on an Improperly Annealed Planchet. What happens is, the mint places it's planchets inside an oven before they are stuck. But, they use the same ovens for different types of coins. When they anneal cent planchets, some of the copper molecules come off and remain in the oven. Then, another type of planchet is placed in the oven and those particles settle on it and are cooked onto it. That results in a thin copper layer on the planchet. The coin is then struck. Many times, you see coins with this type of error but the coating is somewhat uneven...giving you "blotches" of copper color. In this case, the coin was almost completely covered giving it a nearly uniform copper appearance. This coin is slabbed and graded by NGC as MS63.
This Exhibit is GREAT and teaching the reader something new and exciting which fits the photograpghy wonderfully? How did you catch the true color? Which Camera took this photo? Ruben
This photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 5200. I used my desk lamp for light but put a cloth filter over it and had the light source not directly over the coin. I was very pleased as the color came out almost exactly as it appears. I did not digital editing other than cropping. No, the rim is normal. What you are seeing is part of the slab. I had a hard time cropping the pic just right because I had to take the photo with the camera at an ever so slight angle to catch the color just right. Therefore, the pic of the coin isn't perfectly round.
You did a BANG up Job and I think this is the 4th entry...and this is working out just fantastic. We are seeing true coin love coming out! Great pictures, smart posters, worderful right ups! And great coins! Ruben
Thanks Ruben. I have one suggestion though, how about creating a master thread that you can post the links to for all the entry threads which you can edit as new entries come along. That way there is a place where we can go and find a list of all the entries.
Yes - I was thinking abut that. I will do that in a couple of days and post them all in the contest thread. You should be able to search for Exhibit though. Although one of these escaped me that way and I'm not sure why. Ruben
Cool, I'll be looking forward to that. I have only seen 3 to my knowledge including mine. One with a Walking Liberty and the other with a Morgan Dollar. So, I may have missed one myself.
