Hi all, I took these photos for my inventory before they headed back to the bank, and thought some would like to see them. Sometimes the photos in the books don't show the details. Hope you enjoy them, they are my prides!!! Jim 1909-DVB DDO Date area Liberty ) see the BERTY area 1955 DDO, The "Beast of Lincolns" Date area Motto Liberty I will post the 1972 separately as there is a limit to the number of photos Thanks for looking, Jim
Gorgeous pics!!!!!!!!! When you get tired of that 55 you can send it to me. But, is that green around the "LIBERTY"?
When the 55 was grade by anacs back before they slabbed them, hey inserted it into what looks like an airtite container with black foam around it. The foam was stuck to the airtite plastic, and when I carefully removed the coin, as I plan to send it out for re-grading / slabbing, I didn't notice foam particles around the devices. An acetone rinse took it off. Jim
I purchased 1 of my 09s from a show, one from ebay, and 1 from a SLCC mail bid decades ago. Sol Taylor's list. The 55 I purchased from a Reeve's mail bid in 1982. Jim
Anacs graded it as AU50/50 in 1986 with one of the photo certs, and when they gave a separate grade for obverse/reverse. Jim
Is acetone a safe way to remove things like that? Beautiful Lincolns by the way. It would be nice to have a set of the top 50 or even top 10 Doulbled Dies for the Lincoln cents. Thanks for show them to us.
Jim, you got some might fine examples of my dream coins! At least I can look at your pictures and keep dreaming/wanting. jeankay
I love the 1909 VDB! :thumb: I've never seen one with DD'n so it was a true treat! :eat: And if you need someone to Will them to, don't forget about tha Toad. Ribbit
It is safe if you remove it shortly after. If you let it soak(so I have been told) It will damage the patina. I prefer a different method.
Wow you did it again, when I looked at the double die i had to go to my medicine cabinet to get something to calm me down the excitment( Yeah i take meds for that)that;s been one of my wish coins for many years as a collector LOVE THAT COIN. Thanks for bringing my blood pressure up Jim HE HE Thanks for posting Jazzcoins Joe:whistle::whistle:
The opinion on the use of Acetone will differ, but mine is that if it is pure, it will only react with organic material and as ANYthing, even pure water, can pick up contaminants from the environment, it should be used briefly and not soaked for hrs. Although as an experiment, I have put matched RB and BN cents in it for weeks and no noticeable effects on surface in pure acetone and also xylene, as compared with the untreated control coins. HOWEVER!, if there are organic material that has been on the surface of the coin such as a thin layer of oil, varnish, gunk, or "conditioner", when acetone removes this, the underlying patina MAY be different than before and will react differently with the environment once exposed. Many old time darkener solutions used an oil or wax substrate and when those are removed by the acetone, the color WILL look different. This is just my experience, and yes I was very careful with the 55 and rinsed it, stood it on edge to drain the acetone off, air dried and checked to be sure no scum settled on it. Theoretically, pure acetone should not react with metallic material, but in use, may result in a difference in appearance due to removal of non-metallic material. Over time the non removal of such material might also produce metallic damage, corrosion, so choose your risk Jim
