I was inspired by another thread on bad proof cents. I posted the below coin as an example of one that I have. Then I got thinking: We're always posting nice coins here. Let's pay a little attention to the beastly coins. I know you've got some "humble" coins laying around somewhere. Please take a picture and share them. All coins need a little love, even this one. Woof.
How about this? This is what a 3 ruble coin commemorating the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev is supposed to look like: AND (warning: eye cancer) Don't think I need to comment any more.
I was going to ask what I was missing...those looked like beautiful coins! Then I actually read what you wrote. Ouch! Talk about an impaired proof!!!
You got it right borgovan. When I first saw the auction listing, it was listed as a 3 ruble coin. I thought it would be a regular nickel copper commemorative coin but I decided to check it out anyways. When I first saw it, I honestly wept. But as it was sold far less than silver bullion price, something like 5USD including shipping, I just bought it. This coin is the first silver commemorative coin struck by the Moscow Mint other than the Moscow Olympics coins. Mintage is fairly low as there are only 20,000 of them. These days, I find it difficult to get it less than 60USD - I think the asking price these days are closer to 100USD.
Here is one butt ugly coin IMHO, lol: This one is not the greatest in the world, but I think it is kool : Now take a peek at this dog : Phoenix
Those ancients are pretty rough, but they were struck with primitive equipment a couple of thousand years ago. They were then circulated, manhandled, and thrown into the ground. I think they have amazing detail, all things considered!!! Keep 'em coming.
Okay - be very very afraid....for the feint of heart do not scroll down.... The lesson learned here is no matter how much success you have had with a dealer do not buy coins sight unseen. These were a part of a batch I bought from a place I knew about and was recommeneded here - and which I had bought from before. These two coins were not pictured but were listed in inventory under one that was pictured. The one pictured was acurately graded and very much worth the listed price. So I bought all 3 - these were not worth the return fee. I keep these for 2 other reasons - I do not mind someone handling these coins. Sometimes people just want to "feel" and old coin. I have 2 they can use. Second - a reminder to myself do not buy something site unseen, no matter how many times you have bought from someone. So no pictures mark no buy..... Remember I warned you.....one is a 1798/7.
Mark: That's a nice pair of PO-1 detail, corroded, coins you have there! Isn't it funny that you can still attribute them and read the date??? I love them. Great coins.
Actually have not really tried with these coins. In reality the second looks better in the picture than in real life.
ty lol, it was a real SGS slab too I had a ms70 1976 d quarter with evenT toning ( yeah event toning ) which i guess is better then even toning (which it didnt have)
