OK - this one may not look like much to most of you, but it is one of the last two English kings I needed from the Norman Conquest to date, and has proved difficult and expensive to acquire. (At least by my standards!) Henry IV Halfpenny, 1399-1422, "heavy" coinage, S1723, N1352:
Few new things in... Bamberg, 3 heller, AU 58 Spectacular example of a type that is often found in low grades and damaged, especially from corrosion/environment. Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingfürst, Kreuzer, MS 62. Upgrade of my previous example. 1 year type. France, Lorraine, Teston, MS 61. Bought solely for the clear overstrike on an earlier issue.
Kuenker had so many amazing coins this recent auction. If only I had Bill Gates's deep pockets, I'd have bought the whole auction. After picking up the medal further up, I ended up bidding on a few more. Missed another half dozen others as the auction is at nighttime for me, so I'm usually just bidding the day before and hoping it's enough. Often it wasn't, with the coin going for multiples. E.g. 10x estimate... These are the acquisitions. All are from the Netherlands. ^^^ 1724, Dordrecht, wapenstuiver (5 cents) ^^^ 1786 overdate over 1764, West Friesland, 3 gulden ^^^ 1787, Utrecht, 1/2 ducaton ^^^ 1758, Utrecht, 1/4 gulden ^^^ 1762, Utrecht, 10 stuiver or 1/2 gulden ^^^ 1749, Dordrecht, 10 stuiver ^^^ 1761 overdate over 1760, Zeeland, 6 stuiver, piedfort (double thickness and weight, extremely rare) ^^^ 1682, Friesland, Koggertaler (30 stuiver) / Koggerdaalder of Daalder van 30 Stuiver ^^^ 1661, Zeeland, double Dukaton / Zilveren Rijder, another piedfort ^^^ 1694, Zeeland, 3 Gulden, another piedfort but super rare even in regular weight All ungraded, but should be high MS once graded. But first I'll be worrying about the shipment arriving without issue from overseas.
That's so awesome! I love those older coins and it's really cool that you're tracking a specific goal. How many coins are here in that specific set you're looking to build for the Norman conquest? And you have all but two?
My target was not huge - just one circulation coin from each monarch from William I in 1066 to the end of hammered coinage around 1660, then one of each date and denomination from there to 1971. For the hammered there were 3 gaps for a long time: William II (Rufus) 1087-1100 - this one I still need, Henry IV 1399-1413 - this is the one just filled, Edward V 1483 - The Prince in the Tower. It is now thought that no coin can be identified as definitely from that period as the mintmark was used both before and after that date, so I have abandoned that one. Total 26 coins. For the milled coinage I am probably 95% there with most of the gaps either 18th Century Silver or very scarce dates. I have lost count of how many - 1000s! As filling gaps was getting so difficult I expanded into Saxon coins with the aim of getting one for each king of Wessex or All England from 786 to 1066 - a total of 19 kings possible of which I have 12. All gives me something to do!
Slovenian Gold 5000 Tolar (minted in Celje in 1993) commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Sisak:
Kingdom of Hungary Silver Denar of Nikola III Zrinski (father of the Croatian national hero Nikola IV Zrinski (more commonly known as Nikola Šubić Zrinski)), minted in Kostajnica, Croatia in 1531:
Found lots of good stuff - nice pile of pure nickel coins, Buffalo/Liberty nickels, bunch of wheat and indian US cents, old Canadian cents, four dollars worth of US circulation coins and the following silver - including an 1872 US half dime and an early 1800s spainish 1/4 real:
I was going to say it looks like a fun lot to search though and I could see a few interesting things on top. Good job!
And for only $5/lbs. Also - a nice Unc 1908 Great Britain penny. I saved that for the collection. I'll share of photo when I get home.
Again nothing special but I have wanted an example of a "sovereign" penny for a while and this one was cheap enough. Henry VII (1485-1509) Sovereign penny, S2238, minted in York under Archbishop Rotherham:
Another European Crown size coin for my "tangent" collection. Baden 5 Mark 1907. Nothing special but handsome enough to stash away:
Here’s the 1908 penny: Here’s another nice silver I missed on the first dig - 1904 Panama 5 centesimos:
A 1934 Peru 5c in proof. Super rare in proof. Probably not more than a handful struck and they very rarely come up for sale. Including this one, only 4 graded by PCGS/NGC. This example was purchased raw and just graded PCGS PR65 Cameo.
