I saved this cent from circulation after a rather rough life. I felt bad for it so I saved it for my collection. Does anyone have any theories on what could cause this? Have you ever found such a coin? Lets see your pics.
Thrown on the ground repeatedly? Ran over several million times? Looks like someone took their anger out on this coin.
I dunno, my eyes are too welled up to see the coin in its entirety. Im thinking somebody gave it a nice long battery acid bath. Oh the humanity of it all...........
Send it to SGS. I dare them to give it MS-70. That coin could find a home in a "lowest grade possible" type set.
If you click on the second picture to enlarge it.. you will see the strange texture the coin has. It almost looks like an arial view of an alien planet. This isnt your run of the mill abuse.. this is.... hardcore. I'll start the bidding at $500. Any takers?
Ya know, I was just looking at this thread again. I'm wondering and am now inclined to believe that its an older Lincoln made of pure copper, and somebody took a welding torch and melted the crap out of it. I retract my earlier suggestion that is was a battery acid bath. The ding on it at 5 oclock occured either when the idiot then picked it up and dropped it once he found out it was hot as hell, or thats where he picked it up with needlenose pliers and immediatley submerged it in water for rapid cooling.(Im thinking its the second choice)
Looks like parking lot abuse to me. Once dropped unless its shiney or a kid sees it, it can stay there for months at a time. Continually being run over, kicked, scraped, etc. Coins just don't win the parking lot wars. From another thread--Looks like about a MU10 to me!
I believe the penny to have been tumbled for a long time, more likely by the ocean. I detect the beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and I find coins that are very worn, like the one pictured.
Looks like to me it sat in saltwater, something acidic like lemon juice or maybe used for electrolysis. Poor thing.
My first thought was parking lot damage, but the close up's look much worse. I think gravel parking lot then soaked in an unknown nasty substance. Poor coin, you should give it a proper burial.
