I dunno. Got too much time on my hands or something, so here's a hypothetical question for you. What coins would you buy, or at least pursue if you were given 10,000 dollars and one month to spend it. No you can't do anything noble with it like pay off credit cards or stuff it in the kids college fund. You have to spend it on coinage. Forget slabing fees, or buyers fees, or other such incidentals. Think straight up values. This is only for fun, and if your a little over or under so what. Its not like anybody is actually going to do this for you. I think I would start by trying for the best or highest graded 1966 SMS I could find. Always ticked me off my birth year got shorted in the proof set department. Another dream of mine would be a 1945 P Merc MS65 Fullbands. That would go a long way toward topping my set and probably alot of other collectors too. It would take most of the 10 grand as well. What would you buy? Rick L.
The sad thing is that 10k wouldn't get me more than one coin if I stuck to the hard-to-get ones I'm missing, and with only a month it would probably be difficult to find an example for sale. So I'd probably have to pick up decent examples of the common coins I'm missing, and I could fill a number of holes (five to fifteen), but it wouldn't be as satisfying. Really nice early coppers just are not that easy to come by, especially when one is looking for specifics.
I made up a high priority wantlist about a month ago. Turns out it lists about $6,500 in the greysheet and about $10,000 in Coin Values. And the Coin Values price is probably a LOT closer to what it'll cost me. Here it is: Half Cent - Liberty Cap - Least expensive variety in XF (1795 or 1797) - For my type set HALF CENT SET Half Cent - Classic Head - 1809 - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head – 1809 9 over 6 - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head – 1809 "o" in 0 - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head - 1810 - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head - 1826 - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head – 1828 12 Stars - XF or better Half Cent - Classic Head - 1829 - XF or better HALF DIME SET Half Dime - Capped Bust - 1831 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust - 1833 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust – 1834 3 over inv 3 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust – 1836 Small 5 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust – 1836 Large 5 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust – 1836 3 over inv 3 - XF or better Half Dime - Capped Bust – 1837 Small 5 - XF or better Dime - SL Stars/No Drapery - 1838/39/40 AU or low MS - One for my type set MORGAN UPGRADES Dollar - Morgan - 1885 CC - VF or XF Dollar - Morgan - 1889 CC - VF or XF Dollar - Morgan - 1892 CC - XF or AU Dollar - Morgan - 1895 S - VF or XF
I would buy as many high grade 1908 no motto saints that I could get for $10,000. I love that coin and hope to one day fill an NGC box full of them.
Hmmm, I'd buy all the gold plated, colorized statehood quarters and a hologram Obama Kennedy half. I'd get them on QVC so that would probably just cover it with shipping... just kidding. I'd put it all in ASE and Buffalo gold and then trade those out over the years when I found the coins I really wanted. No way I'm running around all month trying to find the perfect coins for sale. The best opportunities are, ahem, when a non-collector sells off a collection. An estate sale.
2006 proof Buffalo 2008 proof Buffalo 2009 high relief gold eagle High grade CC Morgans High grade 1920's sets High grade 1921 dollar 3 leg Buffalo 1941/2 dime 1955 double cent High grade silver Jefferson FS nickels 100 oz. bar of silver I would include the 1917/18 quarter, but there wouldn't be any money left. I think I'm already over budget.
