My father-in-law inherited a box of old coins and currency from a recently deceased 90+ year old friend. There are numerous Confedrate bills ranging from 10 to 100,000 and also some United States Notes. I want to try to sell these for him, but don't know how to verify that they are legit and not some novelty reproduction. Any suggestions of where to start?
Here is a good start!! I am also pretty sure CSA notes were only printed to $1000 note...nothing higher http://www.rebelstatescurrency.com/reproductions.html and here ;http://antietammuseum.stores.yahoo.net/repcivwarcur.html RickieB
Huge help! Thanks a bunch for the link. I quickly verified that all of the Confederates were reproductions. I'm down to three bills now $5 - First National Bank of Waltonville - Oct. 18, 1919 $1000 - The Bank of the United States - Dec. 15, 1840 $2 - United States Note - Series 1917 Any advice for where I can verify those?
Sure..if you can post an image of each note...I am sure there are many here that can help...sounds like you have a National Banknote, and Obsolete and a Large Size Legal Tender......you will need 2 different reference books....or do an online search at www.ha.com from Auction archive records.. Or send the images to me and I would be happpy to look them up... RickieB
Yes, it is the 8894. I discovered info on it shortly after I posted last night. RB, I will post images of the other two bills probably tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys.
They are both real.... The $2 is an Fr#60 and I would suspect a VG to F grade... will need much larger images to check it closely! The Nat Bank Note..I need a larger image as well... It is from Illinos and was Chartered in 11/1911 and Liquidated in 1/2/1926 Only $30,000 in notes out when it closed. I would do a Heritage Search for this note as it may be rare! It's condition is not too good but for National Notes, rarity is more of a factor than condition sometimes! RickieB
The waltonville $5 is a Plain Back.... As mentioned do a Heritage Archive search..if you are not a member I will do it when I sign on next. The notes both have heavy folds and wear..alomost paper breaks... The $2 will go VG to maybe fine... The National depending on its rarity may be much better..we shall see. RickieB
I went to the Heritage site and didn't have much luck finding anything to compare. It's not very user friendly for me. I felt like a blind man in a mine field. If you could check for me I would greatly appreciate it. Pat
The Kelly 5th edition (2006) lists 2 large known for The FNB of Waltonville. Quite rare, although my book is a few years old.
IB Washincars... FYI.. the Kelly Book is regarded as a major information source for National Bank Notes. Professor Kelly is a leading Authority on National Bank Notes. Perhaps you may want to report it to him... You can do so by visiting his site; www.donckelly.com Regards, RickieB
Your note is the third known on this rare bank. It is a great note. A great rarity. While the market is somewhat depressed on Illinois, I feel your note is worth $2000 or more. edited Jess Lipka
Just happen to come across this thread and I have the same 1000 .- Dollar bill # 8894 . Grandmother had it even before I was born - early 50s . Seams like parchment paper -- can one date this fake ? Picture enclosed : Gary H
