According to our local news, a semi carrying $180k of nickles from Philadelphia to Miami crashed this morning on I-95 in Brevard County, Fla. (Cocoa Beach-Kennedy Space Center area). Two semis were involved with one fatality. Pictures showed nickles all over the highway.
I saw that on CNN. Very sad.... one of the security guards assigned to the shippment was killed and the other is in critical condition. The new cast said there were over a million nickels that had to be collected. WOW!
Similar thing happened on a road near Chicago some years back. People came out of everywhere and grabbed as much as possible. Practically none was recovered.
So, does anyone know what will happen with these coins? I would 'assume' someone would go through the coins and the ones in good shape will eventually go into circulation. And I would guess the damaged ones would be melted down and 'restruck' sometime down the road? Sound reasonable?
