Three Day Coin show cycle

Sad to say, we as dealers and as visitors to a coin show are a self-fulfilling prophecy. We create a never-ending circle of frustration.

I am both a dealer that sets up at shows and the bourse chairman for the Tennessee State Numismatic Society and their two annual shows. I see both ends and it is a vicious circle. It is also the reason I set up at lesser coin shows and more antique shows and flea markets.

Probably 15 years ago, before I became the bourse chairman, I was on the TSNS board and was at the Nashville, Tenn., flea market. I was giving out flyers about the TSNS show that was coming up. A man looked at the flyer and said, quite irritated, “Why should I come to your show? I work six days a week and I can only come on Sunday. I drive two and a half hours and when I get there at noon on Sunday over half the dealers are gone.” He pointed to the coin dealer at the flea market whose booth we were standing in front of. “I can come out to this dealer at 3 p.m. on Sunday and he is here to sell me coins.”
