Here's another. Alexander the Great lifetime stater from Abydos c. 328-323 BC (let's see if this works):
8O God, Reid, that is a gorgeous coin! Here's my lowly American entry, recently bodybagged by PCGS: Guess what...I love it anyway even if PCGS doesn't.
Hey, Chrysta. I looks like your pic didn't make it here. I'd love to see it -- I like disagreeing with PCGS. <g> It seems what you need to do is put the URL (Web address) where you store the coin between two symbols: . The software here helps with this. First, type your message. Then skip a line. The click on the IMG box above. Then type in your image's URL. Then click the IMG box again.
Wow, this thread is too rich for my blood! Absolutely great coins. I think what Chrysta is running into is Geocities anti-hotlinking policy. I've sent her a note to offer to host her pictures for her. Should make it easier for her to post images. Anybody else needs help with that, please lmk.
Ok, we have now established for the entire world to see that Geocites SUCKS. (I hope this isn't considered profane.) Here's a link...if that's OK with them, that is. http://www.geocities.com/chrystawilson/gold.html Well, I can see the picture, anyway, but I already know what it looks like. :x Can you see my avatar?
Had problems with viewing some graphics before/elsewhere - not just with Geocities but also, and primarily, with Fotango. My workaround in such cases is to click the Quote button, then copy the URL to a new browser window. Once the picture is displayed, I can also see it in the message window here ... The avatar is there (Panama Pacific Exposition), clearly visible Christian
Here is my only gold coin. Posting Link 'cause the images are kind of big Chrysta: I'm not about to send mine in to PCGS!
Chrysta: I'm not about to send mine in to PCGS! [/quote] No, Stujoe, I wouldn't if I were you! I think mine has like three hairlines on it, and it was bagged for cleaning. It's a cool design, though isn't it? I'm glad to see you made your way over here. Hopefullly a new set of people will see the Stujoe Grading Challenge!
Stujoe, it's interesting the response you got from your survey with that Indian Head gold -- quarter eagle or half eagle? It's a nice coin despite its heavy hairlining. Yet people gave it grades of MS-68, MS-67, and so on. Others gave it grades as low as VF-30 and VF-35. Makes you wonder what planet they live on, doesn't it. I'm no specialist in these, but I'd say the mode grade of AU-53 seems about right. How did the seller grade it? How do you grade it? This may have been discussed in RCC but I didn't follow it.
Reid: Some of the grades I just mentally throw out as people goofing around but it is often hard to tell for sure. Some are probably honest, but unknowledgeable, grades or limited by their monitor, etc. One thing to consider, especially with a coin like this, is that I don't allow a bodybag vote (it goes against my religion) so a lower than expected grade could very well be someone Net Grading the coin. Even with all of the uncertainties, most of the time the grades fall into some kind of a bell curve...especially if it a common series. I think that is one of the neat things about it. As far as the seller's grade, there was none, I got it from my Dad mixed in with a bunch of Wheat cents. (Like I would buy that expensive a coin. I start perspiring at the $25 level! ) I would personally grade it (technically) a lower grade AU. IIRC, I voted AU55. We always grade our own coins a little higher.
Coin Chick and Reid, those are very nice coins! Thanks for sharing. I'm new, but sooner or later I'll figure out how to post some scans of some interesting coins/tokens.
Here's another gold coin of mine: Not! Actually it's on my want list. Not! (Sorry -- getting carried away here.) This Ultra High Relief Saint Gaudens twenty dollar gold piece is the "Norweb Specimen," graded PR-69 by NGC and sold in 1997 for $660,000 through auctioneer Bowers and Merena. The Saint, in my humble opinion, is the most beautiful gold coin -- the most beautiful coin period -- ever minted. The regular business strikes are beautiful enough, but the High Reliefs and Ultra High Reliefs are utterly amazing.
Nice Coins, I have a California Gold $20.00 piece about 1/4 inch around, miniature type. Stujoe if your scan is correct I would be lookin at Liberty as it appears to be doubled. Should bear some investigation, let me know if I am correct. Gold is out of my league and price range at present.
I think it is a combination of the lighting I used and the incuse (or is it intaglio?) design that gives it the doubling look to it. Not only are they hard to grade but they are hard to photograph too!
