Well, today was the first day of the Raleigh Coin Show (and baseball cards, and Nascar, etc) and I have to say that I will have to treat the shows like casinos and other establishments. Only take as much money as I am willing to spend and spend it wisely! ;)

I made out (as far as I am concerned) like a bandit.

9 Morgans to add to the date/mintmark set I am building! (sweet)
1943 Walking Liberty Half - MS62/3 for the misses (major points)
1837 Hard Times token - thanks for the inspiration ND
The ugliest Churchill 1965 crown I could get my hands on - just for fun

And best of all - 4 ridiculous dealer experiences to chalk up in my knowledge list.

Best of all, tomorrow I take the wife to spend her allowance. I think that might be as much fun.... maybe not.

    I'll post pictures on request....

The only thing that I can find is that when times were tough and the money ran out that merchants used these tokens as cent value items. I am searching for some more info on this one, so if someone out there can help decrease my ignorance, help please!

Cris, great finds! Can't wait to hear what your wife comes home with. I'm attending my first show today...you mentioned only taking as much $$ as you're willing to spend...are the shows generally cash only or are credit cards normally accepted? I need to know before lunch so I can hit the ATM if need be. Thanks!!

I've never seen a credit cards being used at the coin shows that I have been to...I have heard of Pay-Pal used at coin show....I think that dealer would like cash better than a credit cards but I don't know.

Let us know how it goes.

There are plenty of us that take major credit cards at the bigger shows. I have not seen paypal yet.

I love the token. Yes that is my avatar. I guess that I will have to change it now :(

No way - I won't make it my avatar!!!

I was inspired, but didn't even think about copying you. My cigar label will stay for quite some time....

Well, yesterday I was on a mission. Today, the wife and I quite simply went a little crazy and had fun.

I preface this post with the fact that I had never been to a coin show until yesterday. After my Morgan binge yesterday, I went home to find that my collection has hit the peverbial brick wall, and that from here on out it is really expensive coins.

Given that, I decided to help the little lady find Frankies and I started looking for Ikes. We found these half off bins, with 2x2s in a pile that were a mixed bag of everything.

Brenda picked up a bunch of Frankies (22) and I scored on a bunch of Ikes that were 50% off with some really sweet proof cameo coins.

I am exhausted!!! (but I had more fun today than I have had yet with coins) :D

I love changing the avatar and sign line every so often. Now that I can finally get the avatar the proper size, I will do it even more often. I love to show off the new and interesting coins that pass through our hands.

I am glad to see you looking at different areas of numimatics. Watch out for those tokens though. They have a way of hooking people. :D
Next thing you know, your token book will be tucked under one arm while you scour through every dealers table looking for that R-5 that some poor dealer didn't research.

CohibaCris it sounds like you've had a blast.
Shows are one of the most fun aspects of numismatics.

Many dealers accept credit cards, although most won't accept it as payment for bullion or $500 and $1000 notes, etc.
I've been doing this for a long time and never heard of paypal being used at a show. Most of the dealers I know dislike paypal for the high fees.

ND, a deep shiver ran down my spine and I saw that image as I read your post. I am now thoroughly terrified that I will end up on the street corner, penniless except for my shopping cart full of high grade coins and sweet little tokens.

I have heard of one guy that said that he needed money on his Pay-Pal cause he was going to use it at the coin show.
    I don't know--that's just what I heard.
