1. I explained early in this thread what happened, and gave a briefer explanation just now. 2. They aren't from the Ancients forum. They're here to insult people and try to bait them into responding in a way that breaks the rules.
Donna there's something you apparently don't understand, ALL sections of this forum are open to ALL members. And ALL members are welcome to post in ALL sections. To put it another way - there are no "outsiders". The thing that's inappropriate is to even suggest that some sections of the forum are off limits to some members - for any reason ! Now that said, is it inappropriate to post for the sole purpose of causing trouble ? Yes, it absolutely is. And that very thing has been addressed, a long time ago. Second line down from the top - And if ya need a link - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coin-talk-rules.34131/ And those rules apply to ALL sections of this forum, and to ALL members, regardless of where they post, most of the time or only some of the time !
Being relatively new to CT, I would hope that the individual that monitors our replies would at least reach out and slap the hand of the individual that purportedly broke what ever rule those on high have deemed inappropriate. Furthermore, if ya don't know you are breakin it how can ya fix it??? Semper Fi
@GDJMSP , You will get no argument from me (or most any of the regular posters I would think) about following the rules. I intend to follow them without complaint. As far as the pinned thread, I would only ask that you consider un-pinning it once you feel the message has been conveyed. It is worded specific to one incident that most of us didn’t see and will soon forget. It would likely only cause confusion to new members or give them the impression that we are an unfriendly bunch of collectors if left pinned in perpetuity.
I do understand. And of course anyone is welcome to come here and post about or ask about ancient coins anytime they want to. But my main point in combining the word "outside" with the word "agitators" (other than making a joke) was that there are no "inside" agitators. I think it does mean something that the only people who post in this forum for the sole purpose of insulting and baiting people -- i.e., making trouble -- are people who never post in this forum otherwise. It's not a coincidence. And those are the only people for whom this forum should be "off limits" -- and I don't mean in a formal sense; I mean they should exercise better judgment than to keep coming here for that purpose. I never suggested anything else.
@AngelDeath, what in the world is that even supposed to mean? Other than another attempt to bait people.
There isn't "one person." There was one person who came here and broke the rules. There are multiple people here who broke the rules in the way they responded.
Y'know, the rules don't actually say this and it's a stretch to expect people would automatically know not to quote certain posts.. If it's that important to you-- and it appears to be, since the liberal quoting of rule-breaking posts in the now-deleted thread seems to have been the straw that broke the moderator's back-- perhaps you should edit the Rules post to make this point clear. Also, a member might not know if a rule has been broken, so they might quote it thinking it is okay. Here's an interesting case from page 4 of this thread which illustrates that last point: Feeling that it violated Rule #2, I reported this post by AngelDeath. Later, a moderator came through and redacted some posts in this thread but left AngelDeath's post intact, so I guess the post was not deemed to have broken rule #2. Sometimes it's hard to predict what will be deemed acceptable by a moderator. Had I known it would be deemed acceptable, I might have quoted AngelDeath right away, asking him why he felt the need to say that. For these reasons I feel the pinned admonition is an overly punitive measure and sincerely hope it is removed soon. I do not shop at stores that have people stationed at the doors, checking receipts as customers leave because I do not enjoy being treated like a presumed criminal. That's how the pinned admonition makes me feel. I understand that we all enjoy CoinTalk at the pleasure of Peter Davis and by extension the moderators, and that we have no control over the rules and interpretation of the rules. I do ask though that you give further consideration to the necessity of a pinned reprimand which appears to be having a negative effect on the community.
You'd be wrong on that count Donna. Ya see, believe it or not, there are some members who normally only post in the Ancients section, but occasionally they venture out to other sections of the forum and post there, seemingly fo rno other reason than - as you put it - making trouble. And occasionally they also do their best to make trouble as you put it right here in the Ancients section. Now you, and probably a few others, doubt this because you don't see it. You don't see it in the other forum sections because you don't go there. And you don't see it here because it's usually caught by a mod, and or reported, and then removed before most in the Ancient section do see it ! But it most definitely happens, and far more often than you think ! And most of the time it's usually one of the other mods who intervenes - meaning not me. And for those who don't realize it, I'm far, far more lenient than most of the other mods ! So if I get involved, it requires serious attention. Of course most folks don't realize that either. But then they're not supposed to.
OK. By the way, I admit that I rarely read anything in the U.S. Coins forum, let alone post in it. But I do post in the World Coins forum on occasion to put up photos of various world crowns/thalers and historical medals I still have. So I'm not completely a hermit confined to this forum!
If it's having such a negative effect, then why is this ? Apparently not all feel the same way you do TIF.
Donna, I'm merely explaining that there's a lot that goes on that hardly anyone sees. Usually because it's dealt with, over and done with, pretty dang quickly. That's NOT an accident, it is quite intentional, purposeful. And it takes a lot of work, work that is donated freely, willingly, and without hesitation. And without ever a request of thanks from anyone, nor is any ever expected. But still it gets done. The result of all that work is what you have, what I and many others consider to be the best - in all regards - coin forum there is. But of course there's a cost, the cost is everybody, in all sections, has to obey the rules.
Sigh. Okay, Doug. We could go back and forth on this all day but it would only make me and others more agitated so I'll stop now.
I am glad I miss the rant. In these times I have learned to ignore and move on. Coin Talk is a great site. Everyone take care of yourselves in these times and keep the info coming about coins only.
I am new to the forum and having just read the rules when I joined I would agree that it isn't plain that quoting a rule violation is also a rule violation. Semantics, I'm sure, but for those who did merely that I can see their position.
