Question on inks

Is there anything that would cause the inks in an 1862 Legal tender note to turn black? I chanced across one of these at a local "trading post" getting a cheap finish sander today, but the ink is completely devoid of color. I figured it was probably counterfeit, but the signatures are readable through all the black, as they appear to be more a shade of brown.

Do not have and cannot obtain pictures at this time, but any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advanced!

Perhaps a replica?? Post images if you have them.

    maybe an under-ink error?

if its cheap enough.. buy it, it could always be a conversation piece :)

    good luck!
