We have recently aquired alot of coins from a family estate. Most of them I have been able to find info. on. There is a tube of silver dimes, that the collector labeled "pointy tail dimes". Does anyone know what these are? I believe they are from the 1940's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found this ad in a Feb. 1965 Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine. Ampere Coins 231 N. 18th St. in East Orange N.J.

Base off the two pictures it looks (to me) that they labeled them wrong. :) The blunt 9 ends in a point and the pointy nine ends in a round or blunt 9. Is it me or maybe I just do not understand.

I was incorrect on the dates, they are 1964. Looks like I have 50+ pointy tails 9's. At least now I know what the 9 on the label means lol. Any idea on the value?

There have been threads on this from time to time. I also own some of each and looked into it a few years back. From what I understand and remember it applies only to the 1964 but the value is the same for each variety. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Forget the "Pointed Tail 9" Dime. I want one of them there "1955 Double Shift" Cents.

Well I d'clare! That ad looks a lot like some of the BS stories that some eBay (Sellers) Scammers use to sell coins.

I would say they are worth the same as any other 1964 Dime - Melt. That's about a buck apiece, give or take a little.

With an estimated 2,000,000 made and very little recognition, a P&D set uncirculated might go for $5 to a Roosevelt dime specialist/collector, but that isn't a real popular area.

I have to agree with Hobo on this one! Even if they were UNC, the 1964-D's are sooooo plentiful, it is hard to get much above melt for them.

Am I glad you said that. I was staring at those photos for a long time and just couldn't figure out what is going on.

Is it just me or does the top photo appear as an artist rendition. Not sure but something seams wrong with those photos.

Well, I will probably be posting more threads. We have a boat load of coins. Peace dollars, morgan dollars, including Cason city. I think there were Barber quarters. Walking and standing liberty's. And a whole lot of individual coins in envelopes with notes I dont understand. I know there is one Flying Eagle penny, I think the date is 1824. A lot of others marked double stamped. Alot of them were not sealed, so conditions have got bad on some. We are going to start catologing what we have, there is just so much I'm trying to learn quickly, getting a little overwhelmed.
