hello, i know little on foreign coins and found this one kind of interesting. whats the metal composition? is it worth saving. thanks.
1962 English legend 6 pence from Great Britain. In xf can be found in any foreign coin box at dealers for 25 cents US currency. Coin is made of copper nickle. You have to go back to the 1946 6 pence to find silver. Very good year by the way. Year I was born. Still a nice coin and an interesting collection of 6 pences can be had. Olmanjon
It is a One shilling piece which was made up of 12 pennies, there were 20 shillings in the old pre decimal one pound. This is what a 1970 6d looks like and one from 1711 :smile
I should also have mentioned that there are two versions of the coin, you have the English one there was also a Scotish version. Both could and were used throught the UK.
Many thanks and so is your shilling, you can put together a rather nice set if you look on ebay uk specialy with the pound weakening against the dollar dd:
The cu/ ni shillings make an interesting set in unc and several are getting pricey but in XF only one or two war- rant much of a premium. The '62 is relatively common.
I should add that this coin comes with two distinct reverses and this is the English version. The Scottish version is similar but has a single lion facing.
I remember getting shillings and florins in change up in the UK to the early 90s.. Shilling was 5p and a Florin (2sh or 2/) was 10p in new money, right?
